Reviving The Age-Old Heater Discussion

Hi, I'm new here. My son got a betta as a "party favor" (grrrr). Through trail and error, we went from the original vase to a small betta "kit" tank (1/2 gallon) to a 2 gallon tank. Along the way, our little friend got severely stressed and pretty much looked like he was on death's door, but as we learned more and did a better job with keeping the water clean, he improved. In any event, he's currently in a 2-gallon take with filtration and a heat stick heater. Problem is, the heatstik overheats something fierce. During the cooler months, the average temp in our house ranges from 65F to 70F, depending on the time of day. The heatstik was supposedly for small bowls and tanks and was "programmed" (ha ha). The thing heated that 2-gallon tank to almost 90F, so I pulled the plug on it.

So that's really just a long way of saying, can anyone recommend a heater that IS programmable or keeps a constant temperature? I know some here think that heaters are not necessary, but I don't think my betta will enjoy the 65F nights without a heater! Thanks in advance.

I use Newattino ones. I have to say, the temp does stay very constant and I've had them for years

Thanks, Blinky. That's exactly the kind of thing I'm looking for. Unfortunately, I live in the States, and I don't thing the voltage would be compatible. If anyone can recommend a similar heater that would work on 120 V, I'd be grateful.

One of the heaters designed for nano tanks might be the answer, check ebay for one of the recognised brands? I would look and post an eg but am on phone

Hey, this is the one I currently use in my 6 gallon (and I used it in my 3 gallon before I set up my 6 gallon). It works great and I've had it for years. For being in the smaller tank, you do have to set it lower than you would think, but it stays the same temperature after you set it. Read some of the reviews from this link and I think you'll find that it's exactly what you're looking for

Sounds like your first stick heater might have been a "+5-10 degrees above ambient" type.

There are a few 2-5 gallon heaters out there that are fixed-temp with shut-off.
I've had great luck with the PetsMart/Marina 10w heaters in my 2.5 gallon tanks.

I haven't used the Hydor myself, but I've read good things.
