So four days ago I saw this little Crowntail Betta at my local pet shop and he has a bad case of fin rot and a little white dot (ick?) on his head. I felt so bad for him I brought him home and named him "Syd".

I now have him in a really nice 1 gallon cylinder shaped jar with some gravel, Indian Almond leaves a fake plant, floating Hornwort and a hiding ornament. I have been keeping his water temperature between 80-85 degrees to help get rid of the ick if that's what he has. He's also been getting daily water changes.

He was pretty lethargic the first few days just either hiding or staying in one place never moving. I didn't feed him the first day since I don't know how much he was fed before I got him. On the second day he was at the bottom of his jar so I dropped some Betta flakes in to get his attention. He found some and ate a few. On day three he was able to come to the top for a few flakes and a pellet. He was very lethargic... sleeping all day in one spot. He'd move occasionally.

Finally this morning on day four he's swimming around like a champ! He was at the surface so I fed him a couple of pellets and he gobbled them up! Now he is swimming all around his jar, exploring and doing his "happy dance" in front of me. He even played the "follow my finger" game! It looks like the white dot is coming off too. I don't know if his fins will ever grow back but at least he's feeling better. Once he's healthy I am getting him a bigger tank.

You need to stop buying fish for a bit or you will become crazy like me. We have MTS and speak fishy language. Do not go down the same path. Remain normal and sain. Oooooooo

LOL! I love these little guys. My other two boys Phil & Miles are playful and healthy and recognise me as "food guy" and I do love taking care of them the best I can. They all have such little personalities!

Anyhow three is enough for me to deal with. :)

ROFLMAO :)

your doomed.

I give you 2 months before you have more fish :)

Haha! No no more fish at least until next spring or summer. It's almost winter here and since I either transport the fish by walking or public transport it gets -30c here in December, January and February. So no I don't want a fish to go through that. Even when I brought home Syd his water was very cold. He's also getting used to a proper day/night schedule. At the pet shop bright lights are on and off for 12 hrs a day. Now he he's used to my schedule.

The three I have are really easy to care for and now that I see the results of good care it's very satisfying. Also I have the time to care for them which is good and gives me something to live for. :)

I am going down the same path. I think my mom is concerned.

I just built a fish room and slept in that :(

Haha I live in a tiny bachelor apartment. I sleep with my fish every night.
Syd my little sick guy is in his 1 gallon jar on a shelf stand right to the left of my work table/desk at eye level so I can monitor him. :)

Honestly, I don't recommend buying sickly fish from a chain pet store. The way they see it, they can carry on stocking these fish and treating them the way they do, usually very badly, since they are being sold.

If you really do feel sorry for them then I would suggest haggling for some sort of heavy discount.

It's always the bettas that I see suffering in big pet stores. They are in those dirty little glass prison cells and have no room to waggle their tails.

I suppose if you are interested in rescuing the fish then if they don't survive you can try for a refund and get another one from them.

Once enough stores are having to give away bettas or are losing stock left and right they might either stop selling them or have a look at why they suffer so many losses.

I guess you have your opinion... thanks.

I'm not trying to per on your bonfire, I think it's great that you have had success with them.

I know exactly what you are thinking when you see them. I see the same sickly fish at my local Pets At Home chain store and I've mentioned to staff that it looks on its last legs but they are just so dismissive.

I have to drag myself away because I think it's awful how they are kept
