So I just got into hobby about 4 months ago and this is my first tank. Didn't do much research as to how to scape beforehand and just bought ornaments from the LFS. Well, I've been looking at pictures and took a 2nd look at my tank and did a little bit of remodeling you can say. I still have a ways to go as I want to move it into the basement with my 55G, but I still have some time until I can move it.

At first when I set it up:

(The plant died real quick (I had no clue what I was doing))

Now after taking a 2nd look at it:

I got rid of the ornaments and put a piece of Malaysian Wood in there to make it a little more natural. I also got some rocks from the river down the road from my house. I am also going try plants again so I added Java Moss (going low-tech now since I read up on it) on the wood and the rocks. The fake plants are still in there, but I will get rid of those once the tank makes the move. I added a bubble wall in the back (the fish LOVE it as well as my snail). The clown poo (my nickname for the substrate) will also be changed once the tank makes the move. I'm changing it out with pea gravel. There is also a half broken flower pot behind the wood (you can barely see it).

All in all, I think I'm going in the right direction. I want to add some Java Fern where the fake plants are, maybe some Anubias. I may also want to carpet an area off. What plant makes a good low-tech carpeting effect?

looks great,

i think once you get those bright plants out, and put in some java fern, it will look awesome!

low tech carpets usually dont work. its very difficult to get a plant to grow low and compact without high light, CO2 and dosing.

i think if you rotated the wood, clockwise, so that the tip on the right was in the gravel more, it would look like the wood was coming out of the ground, rather than just a piece of wood sitting on top of the gravel. hope the makes sense.

well done!

Yes, the bright plants are certainly an eye sore and I can't wait to get rid of them.

Well, looks like I might start looking into the paintball DIY CO2 then one day so I can get a carpet going...

I see what you are saying about spinning the wood. I shall keep this in mind and try it out when the tank makes the move into the basement
