Due to the cost issue, I am torn between a replica coral/live rock setup and the real Mccoy. Can we do a half and half setup in a 300 litre marine setup. That is half replica half real?

fake coral is just as expensive.. at my LFS neway its all £10 - £30 a piece same as the rock

I have to agree with tat2life, I live in NYC and the fake corals are or cost as much as the real ones, maybe with a few exceptions of super expensive corals. Anyway got to consider the time and all for taking care of the real ones and the risk of death and such. On the other hand if you get the fake ones you just pop em in and let em be. In the long run I guess a fake one would somewhat come out more "easy" but without that personal satisfaction and pride that any reefer has.

I think you would be better off getting half base rock and half live rock.

There are some great advantages to fake stuff... but its not a filter. If you don't have lots of live rock remote, then I don't consider it an option.
