Replacing Gravel

Made the newbie mistake of getting gravel instead of sand and currently house 3 corys unaware of it agitating there barbels...

So I'm going to shift half the gravel over to the other side /take it out and replace with sand.. Questions are 1) when cleaning the tank with the vacuum will it not just mix together. 2) is play sand the best?
