Just getting set up after a gap of about 8 years.
Last power filter I had (1970's model Eheim) was as near silent as I could wish but unfortunately I dropped it and broke the case!
Bought a nice package of a Rena Calvados 120 x 50 x 70 cm tank and cabinet.
It came with a Rena XP3 filter which seems to have a good flow rate.
However!
The whole unit is in the living room and the filter is anything but silent! It hums all the time and is annoying not only myself but more importantly, my wife!
The cabinet definitely acts as a resonance chamber and so I removed the whole unit to outside the cabinet and on to the carpeted floor. This has improved things enough to allow me to survive but it defeats the purpose of having a cabinet!
Is this typical of this filter?
Anyone else got experience of this filter?
Am I going to have to bite the bullet and buy another Eheim? (2028 looks impressive)
Any comments appreciated!

Personlly i hate my XP3 as its a nightmare to get going and if you move it too much it gets to much air init.

Other from that its a quiet and great flowing filter. cleans well and is low maintanace. with this im not looking at changing it any time soon.

I've been running a XP3 for about a month now and it's extremely quiet. Seems like you may have gotten a defective unit unfortunately.

Found the Rena very easy to set up, particularly the syphon filler - far better than I used to have to do with my ancient Eheim. Very easy to chase the air out of it.
Will give the filter a few days to settle down before taking action.
Tank taking on a nice haze as it starts to cycle.

I've got the xp2 and it seems to make a kind of humming noise, it runs alongside a tetratec ex1200 and that one is silent.

I run 2 externals on my 90g, 1 of them being an XP3 and it is the noisiest thing ever.

Try putting a face cloth or a shirt under the filter. I noticed my xp4 hums more when the hum is transfered into the wood shelf.

That was my first attempt at silencing. It's now sittting on the carpet at the side of the cabinet (looking untidy!). I have not felt the wrath of SWMBO yet, but no doubt that will happen!
Sitting outside the cabinet has made the hum more acceptable and I will probably put up with it until the tank is settled in. Then I think it will be an Eheim for me!At least the medium will be cycled and transferrable.
Thanks for the responses.
