I needed to treat my tank with tetracyclin, and now I need to get rid of the orange color (I'm done with the treatment after five days). I was going to put a carbon filter directly into the tank, but wasn't sure if this was ok. I couldn't find the one that fits my filter so I got a cheap one. Will it harm anything by just placing it is in tank, not in the filter?

I'm not sure that just putting it in the tank will do.. All the water needs to run Through it to be filtered I believe.. What kind of filter do u have? You can always buy some activated carbon and put in in pantyhose or something like that to stuff in your filter..

I believe it's called a Whisper 20? It's for tanks between 10 and 20 gallons.

How long do you think it would take to remove all of the meds if I had the carbon in front of the output of the filter?

Yeah, just filter carbon works well, once most of it is gone, simply water changes wi make the medication so dilute it won't be there.

You can just leave it in there for months - it is a good tank cleaner too, but im not exactly sure how long it would take. Maybe a day, maybe a month, I'm not truly sure on that question.

Black diamind carbon stays active for about 14 days. They say you can clean it off in the sink and get another 14 out of it..but..that seems goofy to me. carbon acts like a spong but you cant wring it out. so..witha that said. carbon should be in the water line, that is, it should be before or after the filter/powerhead/pre filter. i used melaflix for a while to trat some pirahnas. i used about 12 ounces in a tray in my fluval and the strong mela-aroma was gone in about 2 days.
