Okay the day is approaching where I will be moving my oscar and his tankmates to a bigger tank as they have outgrown my current one. What are some things to keep in mind with this process as it will be the first time I've ever had to move live fish from one tank to another.

My current plan is to empty out about 50-60% of the water so they are easier to catch and drop them into the other tank. This seems like it could be a little jarring for them, is there a step in the middle im missing? any information regardthing this whole process would be greatly appreciated.

If it matters the fish im goign to be moving are

Common Oscar - about 9"
Jack Dempsey - 6 1/2 "
Pleco - 7"
and two tinfoil barbs that are about 5" each (and fast as hell!)

Thanks

Removing all the decorations will help, less to chase around. Using two nets helps herd the fish into one net or the other.

I went through this process several times with my oscar, who started out as a 1" fish purchased at an auction for $2. He as quared in a 10, went to a 20, then a 30, then his curent home, a 72 gallon. Each time I drained 1/2 to 3/4 of the water, netted him, and put him in the new tank. Being a messy oscar he got lots of large water changes, each new tank started with 100% fresh water, the same temperature as the previous tank.

Well, try and tranfer as much water as you can form the old tank. Also tranfer the mature filter media into the new filter to prevent a re-cycle.
