Most now a days come already calibrated, but you can check using distilled water

Put some water on the glass prism, place the cover slip over the top and then look through the eye piece, that will give you a refractive index for what you're testing, you will have to calibrate it first though, to do this, place some RO water on the prism, put the cover slip over it, look through the eye piece and with a screw driver turn the screw clock wise, or counter clock wise until the boundary between the white and blue sections of the scale meets the 0 line.

oh lol.. once you've calibrated it you just put a drop of your tank water on the glass bit at the end, close the flap then look through it pointing it towards a window or similar! Then you have a row of numbers, and where the white meets blue is the number you need to read.. thats how mine works, I assume they're all the same!

No, not really

Does your mum put distilled water in her iron? or your dad use it for the car?

Just thought, when you say you callobrated with tap water, does that mean you turned the dial to 0 and you are now getting an sg in the tank of 1.019?

If so that sounds about right, considering you havent put all the salt in yet

Seffie x

go on, bung it in

i did add some salt but dad thinks wont need all?

i have read different things on the web people say it is fine as the refractometer wont pick it up, then some say otherwise
