Hello, I have a 55 gallon reef, and I was wondering if this tank was eventually vacant, if I could place a few small reef squid in this tank, with just a sand bed and a few rocks. Its been said that the carribbean reef squid is the earths most intelligent animal, even capable of becoming setient, and that they react well to human company. If you guys could tell me the stuff you know about these animals, It would help if you told me.

Thanks :D

imo if they are truley that smart then they are best left in their natural home. in the wild they live in shoals that you couldnt recreate (without a VAST tank)......bit like a bird in cage IMO

Dont tell me about how much I should not keep them, I would very much like some info about them, ie, past expiriences. And I would like to keep them, to perhaps help prove they are that intelligent. Maybe not in the 55, but a 125 should suffice.

Part of getting info on an animal is hearing that you shouldn't keep them if you arent equiped.

I know it is, but i already know some of their requirements, and was looking for some experience someone might have. And Tiggs simply told me about how much i should not keep them, I was asking what I would need to keep them, such as tank size, filtration, ect. so that I can be equipped.

If they are that intelligent, then you are going to have a hell of a time.

I would expect all of the advice on keeping octopi will be relevant. You will need to do things to keep them entertained, such as varying feed times, hiding food (putting it in jam jars works for octopi).

However, if they are anything like octos at escaping, you will probably have to spend a fortune just so that the tank is filtered and inescapable.

Search for stories of keeping octopi, though I would not want to keep a sentient being in a tank, bit like keeping a child in a cupboard...

Andy

with the greatest respect...you allready have your estuarine eels in freshwater - i would say taking some advice at this point as opposed to just getting whatever you want would be a good idea.

Thanks Andy, I dont think they escape like octos though. Yeah, if they are that smart, I should really think twice about keeping them :/

As for you Tiggs, may I ask, do you have any friends? If you do, they must be Irish Lords or something, because only a saint could put up with the bulls**t you are constantly putting out. What about you? You dont seem to take much advice from Nav and the others. And on top of that, you know nothing of my work with fish. Ill have you know that I have 5 very successful tanks, all of which were carefully researched before setting up. Please, although I can handle your flaming, do not prey on some unsuspecting aquarist who puts up a topic that you think is stupid.

Dont critisize people that you ask for help from. Seriously just listen to what they have to say and if you dont agree get another opinion.

I'd have to say, a 55 gallon is probly too small, If you could upgrade your tank much large, maybe a 250 gallon. Then maybe youd be better off.

By the sound of it not many people keep squids... Obviously, so maybe this isnt the best place to find info about them.

Yeah, a probably will get a least a 125 for squids. I will probably just research all I can and go from there.

Squall7733, you are new to this site and probably dont know how bad Tiggs can be. I am not saying he is a demon out of hell or anything, and if he chooses to be helpful, he can be helpful. However, he mocks people, flames people, and sluffs off their advice. Check out the now closed "IS there such thing as mature?"
thread, just an example. I do listen to peoples opinions, and everybody here should, including you, Tiggs.

Thanks to everybody that has given me their info so far

lol....no wonder you want to keep squid - are you trying to raise the avarage IQ in your house?

T

ps- i do have friends but, so far, none of them keep eels in unsuitable water or cram highly inteligent shoaling animals into dinky tanks......so theres a gap in my friends portfolio there if you're interested?

I feel like I am surrounded by whining children.

Chesnut, take some advice, don't criticise other for telling you something you don't want to hear.

Tiggs, you are the ultimate hypocrite. I suggest you keep out of threads if you cannot be well mannered. Take a leaf out of Squalls books and reply in a respectful yet knowledgable way.

Ben

good god! i cant win!

i post an ACCURATE and INFORMATIVE post that starts with the words "WITH THE GREATEST RESPECT..." and you tell me not to post?????

and how am i a hypocryt??? i dont belive anyone should be KILLING FISH which is what happened here and i will offer advice to stop that where i can.

if you wish to offend people i suggest you MAKE CLEAR the actual point that you are offending on- at the moment you seem to just dish out insults without backing anything up.......meanwhile eel man is killing fish and i'm the bad guy?

These 2 posts were utterly rediculous. You are both as bad as each other.

And Tiggs, at the rate you are going no you cant win. I havent dished out any insults that haven't been founded. Tiggs you are a hypocrit because you are very quick to tell people they are wrong and that your opinion is right, yet when you are planning to do something that people see as "wrong" you tell them they are stupid or that they don't have anything to backup their info.

*sighs*

Ben

"These 2 posts were utterly rediculous. You are both as bad as each other."

but he started it so i must be a bit less bad than him? :p

"yet when you are planning to do something that people see as "wrong" you tell them they are stupid "

really? what have i planned to do that people see is wrong and then who have i said is "stupid"......quite a serious accusation that would be nice if it was support by the relevant post. I like to think i only call people stupid when they really are.......not beyond reason that it may have applied to someone here but i dont recall it!
