i have been away from this sport for a while.actually i have a 90 gallon live rock f/o tank running for the last 5 or 6 years with the same 8 fish in it with no problems.now i am up sizing to a 150 gallon and i figure just like technology the salt sish hobby has evolved and gotten better.so my knowlage is limited to 7 or 8 years ago.plus i dont trust any advice from local fish stores.i need opinions -when i swithc tanks what can i put in the new tank to help the stress of the fish?i am so paranoid of ich in a reef tank.is there a new medicime for ich in a reef tank ?does stress coat work?i read something about garlic squieezed ,no clue what that is.i would like to but a bunch of corals and a few more fish by it has been so long with no problems i am paranoid to rock the boat.
thank everyone

Marine ich is a different sp. to freshwater (Cryptocaryon irritans)
Problem is that the chemical additives that will treat the fish/water for ich will certainly kill inverts. Namely Copper and Formalin.
So really a seperate QT tank is needed.

there is a non coper SW ich treatment available now but I do not remember the name. Don T.

Stress Coat and garlic won't do anything to whitespot.

Triple Sulpha will treat whitespot but not Oodinium. Oodinium being the smaller of the two parasites.

If you don't have whitespot in the tank then get a quarantine tank to keep all the new fish in. Leave them in the quarantine tank for a month and if they are healthy and have no problems, then add them to the main tank. If you don't quarantine new fish there is always a chance something besides whitespot gets into the tank and kills everything.
Prevention is better than cure.

There are several reef safe treatments, one that I have used with success and no NEGATIVE effects is Kick-Ich. It will affect your tank though...corals will not open all the way, and I actually noticed a lot of growth after the treatment was finished? Anyways, my inverts and corals all survived and didnt seem to suffer at all.

i don't have any problems right now.i was wondering when i change from my 90 gallon to my 150 gallon something i can put in the water to relieve stress before they get a desease.god knows over the years i got bad advice from lfs and had alot of fish die from ich .when i do add fish would like to keep the chances low.hate to lose the fish i have had for years you know.

Ehn...I wouldnt dose the tank until you had a problem. In the case of moving to a larger tank...or any tank...patience is often a much better treatment than any chemical. If you must though, I can certainly recommend Kick-Ich, however...it's a two week (or longer) dosing process...so on a tank this size, it would be pretty expensive just as a precautionary measure. I think I paid $30 for a 75 treatment.

As above dont treat unless you need to.
I would say move everything over but leave the smaller tank running as a quarantine tank , then if there are any issues you have somewhere to treat.
In my own experience I tried reef friendly meds with no luck what so ever and ended up losing most of my fish in the bargain . Personally I would always quarantine and treat with the propper meds. These co called reef friendly meds cause more problems than they are worth. Better just to risk the fish than losing the whole tank inc rock inverts corals etc.

i have a little 45 gallon tank i will set up for the qt.thanks for the advice paranoia is key to a healthy tank.

I have 1 cond. aneomy, a group of mushrooms.. a chainlink eel, coral beaty angel, koran tang, 2 angel fish, engineer goby, fire fish goby and 2 cleaner shrimp in my 55g, with like 10 snails. Would this kick Ich, cure my ich in my tank after awhile ? and can i get this at the local dealer?

cure? Probably not...but it will kill cryptocaryon irritans in certain stages of their life cycle. So if your fish survive through the rupturing of the cysts which release the free-floating form of the parasite, then there is a much better chance that the parasites will not return if kick ich is being used.

ah, i see. That makes sence, so kick ich is a good thing to have, that can prevent ich from comming back.
