I purchased two male guppies and two females several months ago.I had to work away from home for six months and the tank was maintained by my partner. In the intervening period needless to say the guppies reproduced.I have now returned to a tank with about thirty guppies both male and female and more arriving every day.I am concerned about the overcrowding. What can I do ? If I have to put several of the fish down to reduce the numbers, what is the most humane way to do this ? My local dealer is not interested in taking any of the fish.

where are you loacated, some one on here may take some off your hands, do you know anyone else that keeps fish? try spliting the two sexes for now. what size tank is it?

Omg don't put them down. Sell them to friends, Petsmart, LFS, or sell them online, any other pet stores, or you can buy a bigger tank until they sell.

Agreed.

How about buying a second tank to split up the sexes? Then you'll have two community tanks.

Find someone with a predatory fish maybe. Donate some to it's tummy.

In the past when I've had to euthanize tiny critters, I've always used the freezer. Thats how I'd prefer to go, I've read that when you freeze to death your body fall asleep before it kills you. Most painless way I can think of to kick the bucket.

Of course, other alternatives should be exhausted first. Don't forget if you split the sexes that some fish can store sperm inside of themselves to use as they need it, and some of them are probably pregnant right now.

When your body goes in to a state of frezzing to death, your brain releases a fluid that basically makes you so comfortable and relaxed, you get a feeling that you never want let go, this is when your body suts off and sends you to sleep and obviously soon after you die. its meant to be the best way to go, apparently i read that people out in the sea on riggs etc, have tried to wave helicopters off to leave them cos of the feeling they are experiencing.
