Redoing my 6 gallon

This is the neighbouring tank which houses my ADF's. I really struggle with algae on one specific plant, the one on the left of the image. I can't remember the name of the plant but there's another one at the back of the tank which has the same issue but even worse. The leaves are always breaking so they just don't seem to be thriving. I'm hoping that if I can grow some of the plants in the 6g out I'll replant the stems in the place of these.

I know the plants will grow but that negative space irritates me so much!
Don't talk to me about negative space when one of my tanks currently looks like this lol 😂 It got that way in 2 months, so I assure you, if you plant the right (or wrong😆) stuff, it absolutely WILL grow to the point you won't know what to do with it. I have a cursed water sprite/frogbit combo, plus a pathological reluctance to cut any healthy plants;), so now I've landed myself in a bit of a pickle lol. I really think it's time to take some scissors to that tank before it grows legs and walks off on its own XD

Send some of those plants this way! The sessiflora has definitely grown an inch or so already so I know it's just a matter of time, I am a terribly impatient person in all domains of life, so fishkeeping really does test me!

I've decided to go check out an LFS in north London next Saturday to see if they might have anything plant/invert/fish wise that takes my fancy.

I'd be more than happy to give you some, but I'm in continental EU so don't know if the shipping etc. is worth it or if they'd even survive 😅 But if you want plants that grow so fast you can practically hear them, water sprite/wisteria, hornwort & most floaters will do the job, especially when they hit the water surface - they get that extra hit of CO2 and just go nuts 😂 (if you have an artificial setup then that'll also help tremendously). From what I've read, CO2 seems to be the biggest/most common limiting factor in planted tanks, more so than any other nutrient deficiency. I don't use any CO2 supplementation and my water sprite babies that are completely submerged seem to be doing kind of *meh*, but the ones that have put out leaves above the surface are just uncontrollable at this point, and keep producing new plantlets all the time.

Bought a little pothos online (probably got ripped off compared to the cost of buying the actual plant myself but wanted to see how I got on with a small cutting as I've never tried growing pothos before).

Also ordered a new light for the tank, not much wrong with the one that comes with it but I broke the mount and can't find a replacement. The one I've ordered has more settings, my current one is just on/off, so looking forward to having a play with it when it arrives. Nothing fancy, just a hygger.

New light, catappa leaves and rotala rotundifolia arrived today. Boiled the leaves for a bit and plan to add the tannins to the tank when it's cooled. I haven't quite worked out the timings for the light yet, the instruction manual isn't completely clear but will figure it out. I think we're ready for fish if I can find something I like.

We have tannins! Picture isn't great due to glare but couldn't resist adding them to my other tank as well.

The plant on the front left in the corner is a sword plant (Echinodorus species). On the right of that is a piece of Ambulia. Echinodorus can be rapid growers but it might be getting too much light (light on for too long) and is unable to use it all. This allows algae to grow on it.

The Java Fern and Elodia look really good.

If you want to get the sword plant to do better, you could put it in a pot with gravel and put that in a bucket of water outside. As the water evaporates the plant will develop terrestrial leaves and you can grow it like a normal pot plant.

Thanks, I may give this a go, there's another one in the back right. I cut the light right back in that tank because of the algae on the swords, it's only on for 5 hours but the leaves are just dark, almost like they are stained with algae. I brush them with a bamboo toothbrush whenever I do a water change but I still have the same issue. Have tried blackouts, I don't use ferts in that tank either (can't find one that is same for amphibians).

The stem on the right (if that's the one you're referring to) is limnophilia sessiliflora, I had a spare stem left when I was planting this tank and just shoved it in there haha. I was hoping if the limnophilia did well I could take the swords out completely as I'm fed up of the constant algae battle!

I took a trip to a shop called Fish Planet London yesterday, very unassuming place from the outside but absolutely massive inside! They had a whole shelf of bettas, and I was particularly drawn to this little guy, he was quite active and feisty looking. Not the best pic, I took it just before acclimating him and then I let him be yesterday with the light off but you can get an idea of his colours. They had some nice dumbo betta as well but I preferred the colouring on this guy, and someone else was eyeing him up so I grabbed him lol. Felt very odd traveling on the train with a fish lol.

They quarantine for a week before putting fish up for sale and say they'd had him for a few weeks total, they don't treat for parasites/worms so will keep an eye out for anything in the next few weeks or so.

Will try and get a better pic at some stage, I've seen him briefly this morning but the lights are just coming on so have left him alone for now until he's settled. With the tannins he actually blends quite well into the tank so I had a hard time finding him this morning. I do name any single fish so he'll also need a name in time!

They had a surprisingly good selection of fish and tons of plants and other bits and bobs in the shop so if anyone is local to north London or visiting on a holiday I'd recommend going to have a little look around. I believe there's a few videos of the place on YouTube.

I'm not sure if there might be an issue with this betta's fins now that I have had the chance to observe him. I've attached some pictures to show the area I'm concerned about, it looks like he has one 'stumpy' fin. Not sure if anyone can chime in on whether I need to be worried?

Which fin are you concerned about (top, bottom, side)?
Hi @Colin_T I've circled it in this image. It looks kind of short and stumpy compared to the rest of his fins. I can't see any obvious signs of rot or anything but just wondering if this is natural or something to be concerned about. He's eating and exploring a lot more now so seems pretty happy in himself.

I think it's a dragon scale Betta or its parents were (it appears to have some dragon scale genes). Dragon scale Bettas have scales that are more prominent than normal fish. It's a man made mutation. The main drawback to dragon scales is they usually get scales growing over their eyes as they get older and eventually they are blinded by this. Whether your fish develops it is unknown but it might. The scales shouldn't cause any issues to the fins. The little bumps on the fin rays are little scales.

As long as the fish is eating well and all the scales don't start to lift up and stick out sideways, I wouldn't worry about it. However, if more scales start to stick out from the body then post more pictures because that could be a problem.

Basically, you have a mutant fish with an interesting set of scales :)
