Got home to find out of nowhere my red zebra shreaded my electric blue, I noticed the zebra going after him last night but didnt give it a second thought since they have been tankmates for a long time. Got home today to find the blue just in pieces. Ive got him in the isolation tank but I dont know if he is gonna recover, he is in bad shape. Funny thing is, the blue is twice the size of the zebra, should have been able to hold his own Id almost like to see that stupid zebra try to pull that **** on my red devil or black shark. I guess he knows better than that.

Fish only know what their geneticaly programed to do...

perfect example why it's important to pay attention to AGGRESSION description when RESEARCHING fish BEFORE they're bought.

Well, they both are africans so its not like I put the zebra in with a betta or something.

Red zebras are one of the bigger mbunas and can get quite violent I think when they get older, I have some and have noticed they are starting to get a bit more bossy, but kept in their place by my ice blue greshake.

What type of mbuna was it bullying I know you said electric blue, but that covers many cichlids under that description

cheers chish

The most common species referred to as "Electric Blue" is Sciaenochromis Fryeri, which is a Hap and will almost certainly struggle to cope with Mbuna aggression. I'm guessing that was the problem - it is best to keep Mbuna with other Mbuna species only, exceptions being certain catfish. Other combinations are possible but not generally reccommended. :good:

He was an electric blue ahli I believe that is how you spell it, the blue was actually consiterably bigger than the zebra but I guess its not the size of the fish in the fight its the size of the fight in the fish that matters most. Blue didnt make it either:(

Actually I do have a mixed tank, I have a red devil and a black shark both over 10 inches long who run the tank. and Ive got several other african and american cichlids as well living togeather withought incident. No this fight wasnt due to mixing africans with americans, it was african on african agression. The africans dont bother the larger SA/CA cichlids in the tank, they are smarter than that, Im pretty sure they know what would happen to em if they did. They dont mess with the shark either, they just clear out of his way lol Only time Ive ever had a fight between an african and an american was about 3 years ago when my melanochromis auratus wanted to be the toughest fish in the tank, long story short, he attacked the red devil, devil made an example out of him, and that was the last serious display of agression untill this.
