Just curious for example you have a white swordtail and an orange male swordtail and they breed are the babys going to be orange and white, all orange, all white or a mix

could get anything... both, either, or a relatives color. Almost like people and who they take after...
I had a grey molly and a white molly give an orange fry.

Becoase the genetic's are not a simple line in fish you could get anything from them.

But it's fun to see what u get.

In selective breeding you get several fish with the traits you want and breed them. Keep the fry with the same traits and breed them and so on till the trait becomes a dominent one. Sometimes this can take years. There will always be a throwback here and there.

It all has to do with Mendel's discoveries in genetics. With the first generation and the second generation and the dominant trait and the reccessive trait. To keep track you use a punnet squares.

Basically; richchappy. But you have to watch the inbreeding. After a while the fish may show deformity or be weaker healthwise. It is better to have several unrelated fish with the same traits and go from there.

If you strat of with line breed fish then yes u can get books of livebearer genetics which can explain which colours are dominate and ressesive, and how to fix lines.

If you want to creat a new line you need something likw 30 tanks min!!!!!!

you breed the pair u want with the traits.

Keep the female fry vergin by removing all males as they devlope.

Cross the best doughters with the dad or brothers (keep's the gene's close)Each female then hase to kepet on her own to get the fry and know which was the best, ditch all the rest and start again.......

It can take many years as said already but it's hard work to do....

i know i do not have enough money tanks space etc to do it at the moment, but could you do it on a smaller scale with just 2 tanks, ie. have the community tank and then keep the 2 fish in one tank that you want to breed and just keep the good looking ones and repeate it,

course u can try, but it's difficualt as u have to rearly select the one fish u want to breed from, the more tanks the more lines u can have going to select the very best.

its like when i bred 2 red tailed guppies, what did i ent up with, blue females and a male like in my signature, bred him to a colourless female (not related) and gave all blue fry.
