Does anyone know anything about this species? Tank size? Could I keep them with regular dwarf puffers? Do they require salt in the water? How large do they grow?

There are 6 species in the Carinotetraodon genus, all except the common “dwarf pea puffer” broadly fall under common a common name variation of “red-tail” or “red-eye” puffer. Common names in this genus are of little use as they all similar in appearance, size, location and behavior. One collectors “red-tail puffer” might be another importers “red-eye puffer” and so forth. The best way to identify your particular specimen(s) is to count the rays in their fins or to compare to pictures on FishBase.

These are all small, freshwater only Asian species that are mild mannered in comparison to most puffer species. They can be kept in groups provided they are given enough space and sight-breaks, similar to the way aquarists keep the common “Pea Puffer” Carinotetraodon travancoricus.

All specimens are wild collected so should be given some care in regards to acclimation.
