Red Tailed Catfish

i saw a red tail at a garden center last week, crikey it was huge

its tank was only just big enough for it to go verticle and was only about twice the fishs length,it made me so angry seeing the beast being kept in those conditions that although i really wanted to start stocking my tank i refused to buy anything from there and now have to wait a few weeks till i get the time to go to another place

from the sounds of things it wasnt even full size

Yeah, they get about 4' in captivity and 6' has been heard of out in the wild.

I'm pretty sure they get bigger then 4' in captivity.. the ones i saw recently were deffo more then 4ft.

If you have done your 'research' then what is the point of this thread? If you had done your research, you wouldn't have made this thread.

In case you didn't know for one of these fish to be happy they need about 8500 gallons.

My hubby's joked about raising one to an edible size... typical midwest fisherman!!! (And i'm a fisherwoman...so don't start bashing me about my stereotype :good: )

Sounds like we all now a place that does it :p Swallows aquatics in Rayleigh also has an RTC in a cramped show tank, I remember them having a few reject Pacu before aswell.

I just got my Red Tail Tiger nose catfish hybrid 4 months ago...and the cute little 3" fish is now 9" and eating anything even the tiniest bit smaller than itself. Great fish, I really like him...but he is not the Sorubim lima he was advertised to be. Nope.

Currently in a 90 gallon tank, I know he will get too big for in a few months. I am planning on putting him into a 6 ft diameter pool 2 feet high. If he get too big for that, then maybe I'll invite him over for dinner

But no, they shouldn't be selling these guys. They look so cute when tiny...so I can see why so many buyers get suckered in...

...oh and I had done my research, it was just on the wrong fish. The Sorubim lima shovel nose should have been happy in a 90 gallon.

Red tailed tiger shovelnose? Ouch, both parents can reach 5' in captivity so a 6' pool is unlikely to be enough.

Sad but true, and I have just spoken to someone in my area who has 3 of these beasts who are currently still young at the 2' stage. He has offered to take mine off my hands, as my guy will certainly begin eating his current tank mates soon. I really like this dude, but he is dangerous...and fortunately I can give him a good home.

What in the world are these dealers thinking stocking their stores with new born fish when they get to be 5-6' long! I ponder who is at fault, me for believing I was getting a Sorubim lima or the guy who is selling them and calling them whatever he feels like. Should I have done more research??? Guess I will always be asking myself that question. Sad though, when you cannot trust the stores you deal with.

yeah thats the one,and in the tank above it they have another 2 or 3 huge fishs in a tank the same size
when i saw it there were loads of screaming kids bashing on the glass and the store assistants didnt seem bothered at all
the strange thing is that they have like billions of huge koi tanks but they wont give the catfish a suitable home
pretty much every second tank i saw had dead fishs in it as well
the other animals sold at the hollybush didnt seem in much better health either

in the end i went 2 a really nice place just outside newport to get my fish and a few days ago discovered that i have a fish store a few mins away from my house so i wont be goin to hollybush again
