I've been looking for some red severums - they look like gold severums but with lots of red dots/markings. Some are almost completely red. Still not sure where to get them from yet..

I went to a local breeder today and picked up a few rotkeils. Interestingly, he told me all the red (or red-dotted) severums on the market are from singapore, and that they are F1s between two different species (gold severum x something with lots of red dots on them). He also said he knows a guy with a pair that had spawned three times but no fry, which is consistent with them being sterile. In other words, like mules.

Well, I don't want to believe it but how else would you explain why they are so expensive and rare? Can somebody please tell me otherwise (some parent/fry pictures would be great). I guess I just don't like the idea of having a hybrid...

I've seen some Gold Severums that were pretty red. I think it has to do with diet and water conditions...

A few pictures from google image (these are not the "reddest" yet). I'm not sure if you can grow "regular" gold sevs into this?

From what I gather (in bits and pieces online) they are just Gold Severums that have been line-bred to obtain the deep red color and are almost always male. Whatever they are, they are beautiful. Let me know what you find out...

So nobody successfully bred them before? With all the folks here, you would think somebody has done it if it can be done...

They are line bred yes. But no they aren't normally always male. ~T~ a member of this site had a breeding pair.

They are known as super red severums and should be treated just the same as other severums. So they are just as easy to bred as other severums. They don't seem all that hard to get hold of my LFS gets them in quite often.

Yeah my lfs carries it too - $6 for green, $9 for gold, and $45 for red. Can't help but thinking there's something fishy...

And yes, I am obsessed :)

Good to know. Like I said, this was all info that I picked up online after a quick search. I would love to breed some Red Severums.
