hi guys, as my nano is now ready for fish, a day before i go my only tank occupant a small redlegged hermit seems to have died, going all the way back in his shell and ive had the shell out to examine it and there is no life :( i mean i know its just a hermit but i dont want this to happen to anything else! all my waater seems fine, so i dont know what it could have been. any ideas? there is hair algae for him to eat everywhere, and ive been putting in sea weedflakes. is this a sign of something serious?

You sure it actually died? I've had hermits just pull all the way into their shells and stay in there for days and just as I'm starting to lose hope in them being alive, they suddenly move!

If however it has died then it seems like a natural cause if all your water params are ok...

In my attempts to cycle my 13 gallon Nano, Ive had a fair amount of die off including some small hermit crabs. Im not sure about red-legged ones cuz mine are Hawaiian, the main culprit which has been responsible for the die off has been high ammonia and nitrites of course.

In every case of hermit crabs death (2)...they havent craweled deep into their shells. Theyve done the opposite actually.

They remove themselves out and then die...really sad actually.

Now that my tank is nearly cycled though, happy to report no more deaths.
