I added 2 platies to my 80L fish tank (not sure of the brand) and all was ok but I did have a mini ammonia spike which has gone now after 2 50% water changes and after a water change yesterday my levels are

ammonia 0ppm
nitrite 0ppm
nitrate 10ppm
pH 8.0

I was thinking the gulping at the top could be due to not enough oxygen but my cardinal tetras and my clown pleco don't do this. but I thought red swollen looking gills could be ammonia poisoning :( they seem quite jumpy too.

would adding an air stone to break the water surface work?

I'll add some photos later when I get home from college

hi, gulping at the top is a sign of ammonia poisoning, the fish can't process the oxygen properly.

If the fish symptoms are still there then large (70%) water changes with good technique (conditioner and temp matching) may still be needed. What brand/type of test kit are you using to get those readings you've posted?

I'm using an API Master Test kit so I think it's pretty reliable I've just tested the water levels and they are:

pH 7.6
Ammonia 0.0ppm
Nitrite 0.0ppm
Nitrate 0.0ppm

I've now added an airstone to break the water surface and see if that helps at all, not really sure what else to do other then keep testing the water :/

Yes keep testing for ammonia and nitrite twice a day and if ANY is present do a 50% water change then test again. Have you read in the beginners section about fish in cycling as this will give in depth info.

I've had the tank set up for 9 months now and never had any problems before now :/ I'll keep testing the water and do changes accordingly thanks for the advice
