Can anyone tell me the minimum size required tank for red bellied pirahna's

Thanks Matt B

Thanks loads.... Shame though always wanted one but i only have a 3ft tank :X Oh well...

They need alot of gallons as if the piranhas feel their tank is too crampt they start to cannibalise each other, even in good conditions in a community piranha tank expect them taking chunks out of each other every now and then- although they can survive from some pretty nasty injurys that would kill most fish.
Piranhas are very messy eaters and high protein foods like meats mess up water quality alot so you have to do water changes almost every time you feed them, feeding them on a regular basis can also be quite pricey.
For a group of 5 you are looking at around a 90-100gal tank minimum.
Personally i think there are alot more interesting predatory fish out there, piranhas in my opinion are a bit...well, novelty fish realy.

In a lot of states the piranha is illegal so you might want to check into that before trying to buy some of them. There are some other interesting fish you could get that are less of a "novelty" fish. The wolf fish is a predatory fish that is less common than the piranha but still amazingly vicious.

Anyone know where i can get a wolf fish from? .

Thanks Matt B

Maybe a stupid question, but why would these fish be illegal? Is it a conservation issue or a safety concern? I don't want to be contentious but it would seem strange if a country which counts the right of it's citizens to own handguns so highly didn't trust them to keep a certain fish.

In the UK we had a debate a few years back about making certain breeds of dogs illegal and I know a lot types of animals can't be kept.

quick one on red bellies -
minimum tank requirements, you should be looking at 20 gallons per fish for life, for example 4 will do fine in an 80gallon.

try not to keep just 2 together, as the terrotorial problems are pretty harsh, so go with one, or 3 and upwards

at a juvenile age , they grow very fast, approx an inch per month for the first 6 months so make sure your tank is efficient to cater for this

hope this helps, any more info needed just ask

Heres a link on wolf cichlids

I think they're probably talking about Hoplias malabaricus (wolf fish), Erythrinus erythrinus (red wolf fish) or Hoplerythrinus unitaeniatus (gold wolf fish) rather than wolf cichlid.

I'd have absolutely no clue where to get them from though ... plus, some still require a mighty big tank.

oh whoops lol. i saw the word wolf so immediately thought of wolf cichlid :p

I saw Wolf Fish for sale in Montreal

If you like Piranhas, the black piranha might be an option as it needs to live alone, it will eat any companion you put in with it.

Only problem is, it is illegal to feed live vertebrates in the UK, so I'm wondering if a piranha would eat dead meat?

Otherwise, a Wolf fish gets pretty big and will require as much space as 3 piranhas so...
