My fish are suffering with recurring fin and body (white slightly protruding blemishes) rot.

I've increased the tank temp to 30C, removed carbon/Green-X from my filter & tried Intrepet's Treatment No 8 Anti Fungus & Finrot. That temporarily got rid of the body problems and it looked like fins were growing back, but after a week, the same problems returned.

I'm currently trying Waterlife's Myxazin, but that doesn't seem to be doing anything other than turning the water green (and therefore reducing light penetration/photosynthesis?).

Has anyone out there successfully overcome this problem with other remedies (available in the UK)?

I'm contemplating splashing out £60 on a UV steriliser but would prefer not to.... would a UV steriliser kill the bugs responsible?

I'm thinking of trying Intrepet's Treatment No 9 (Anti Internal Bacteria) or Waterlife's Protozin next - any other ideas?

I'm having the same problem as you. I've tried three different meds and they don't seem to fully do the job. I've removed a few of the fish b/c the affected fish are goldfish and make enough wastes as it is.

Sorry I couldn't help.

I definetly cannot offer any guidance because I too am having a similar problem. I thought it was fungus, now looks like body rot. Meds aren't helping. :dunno:

I may have spoken too soon about Myxazin for curing my fishes problems: a temp of 30C and remedicating every day (as directed) seems to be having an effect.

My plants are suffering though as the water is very coloured. -_-

I'm going to buy a UV steriliser in Jan....

njparton,

I am using Melafix, "a natural antibacterial remedy." It is supposed to:

- Heal open wounds and ulcers
- Rapidly restore damaged fins
- Stop mouth fungus
- Treat fin and tail rot
- Treat eye cloud

Well, that's what the box says. I did some research over the net and pretty much everything I've ready is positive.

Today is the first day of treatment so we'll see.
Melafix info.

Unfortunately, raising the temperature will only speed up the growth of bacteria on your fish. Melafix and daily water changes with aged water will work in 90% of cases where anti-biotics are not necessary. Cleaning the gravel will obviously be a given also!

I'm increasing the water changes right now. The Melafix didn't work for me b/c I didn't remove the carbon from the filter. Unfortunately, the $ I got for the refund was spent on other fish, so now I'm too broke to buy it again. :-(

Most medications will change the water color, by the way. The Melafix didn't, but that was probably b/c I didn't remove the carbon or didn't add enough. It smelled pretty strong, so I would have though that it'd work well.

Yep - you must remove all ion exchange media including carbon, zeolite and green-x....

Progress is slow but in the right direction here....
