I am looking to rebuild/redo one of my tanks due to a change in the viewing angle. It is a 45cmx30cmx30cm tank, that will instead be primarily viewed through the side as a 30cmx45cmx30cm tank. It will still be viewed at times through the 45cmx30cm side, but mainly the 30cmx30cm side.

The current inhabitants are black tiger darios with at least one confirmed female. There is also some red neon blue-eye rainbow fish as differ fish to increase the black tigers confidence. Alongside various cleaning crew of snails and shrimp.

I was originally thinking something like an explosion effect, creating caves that way alongside a "tree" coming out of the explosion point.
However, I quickly realised I wanted to attempt a cave/tunnel system with overhangs. Some of my original designs wouldn't have worked, but I believe I have come up with some that would.

There are three designs, one with dragon stone, another seiryu stone, and another freakstone. Each one features two larger stones at the back angled towards each other with plants coming up between them, a middle island covered with moss, a stone wall (likely to be made with polystyrene foam and coated), and a post in the front left. They are also meant to contain an overhang from the front left pillar, but it was hard to make it on the site I used.

The substrate is still a work in progress, it will have a soil base, but the cap might either be sand or another type of soil.

I hope, during the creation to make a plentiful supply of caves for the black tigers to live within.

How do these look, anything that could be changed? Which is preferred?

The stones in the designs are unlikely to be the actual stones or even type of stones, but what colour looked better.

Any opinion would be appreciated, thanks.

I like the 3rd one. The lighter substrate and reddish rocks look good. I also like the colored plants and the driftwood will help with more cover. You have to put up picks of how your tank turns out!! I need some inspiration because I am terrible at aqua scaping and I am going to get a 29 gallon and a 60 gallon soon and may re decorate my 10 gallon as well if I have enough room for it.

I believe that I will be going with rainbow stone/rock, supplemented with some dragon stone that I already have.
So you believe to cap the soil that is present with some sand? Create a lighter substrate?

I should already have the wood if I use the bonsai branch/twig/tree things I got at a lfs. They're similar looking to the talawa wood in the design, and I might be able to take a part something else to get some driftwood if needed along with the spider wood in the original set up.

Maybe only partially sand capped where across the glass, like as if it is the stone ground in a tunnel and the middle (where the plants on aqua soil is) is this cove where the light is shinning down to create a paradise? That would work as I already have some sand, easily enough to do that.
The original idea is that it is these underground tunnels, so this adaptation would still fit very well.

What styles you looking at for your new ones? Or don't know yet and just nosing around?
I love natural zones, most being the tree surrounded by these two tree roots being the least "natural" (excluding the upstairs rack tanks).

Yes I think the lighter substrate would look really nice. You can put it wherever you feel is best. You are doing dirt? Just for the plants or the look of it as well? The only problem with doing dirt and sand would be the cleaning. The lighter colored sand will show dirt easy and you can’t siphon it out super well with the dirt.

I am getting my 29 gallon in a few weeks but I won’t be able to set it up for almost a year!! 😭 I’ve had it for a few years but after a cross country move I had to leave it behind but we are going to visit some people and will pick it up while we’re there along with a pond heater for a koi pond we are going to build someday. I have to rearrange my room and my dad is going to remodel the house a bit as well which will allow me to have the two new tanks. My 29 gallon I want to have a good aqua scape but I’m not sure what I want it to look like yet. There will be 12 panda Cory’s, 15 toucan tetras, 6 ottos ( not sure what kind I want yet thinking maybe tiger, or orange zebra maybe ) and then 15 Heterocharax virgulatus tetras but I haven’t gotten confirmation if it will all work yet or at least with the toucans.

The 60g will be peacocks and haps
Ruby red peacock
Bi - color 500
Aulonocara Turkis
Deep water hap
Protomelas Marginatus
Otopharynx tetrastigma
Flavescent peacock
Aulonocara rostrum a
4 Petricolla catfish
We will see how it all works out, things might change a bit. I am a little nervous for this tank just because it is a bit more complicated. The biggest fish I’ve ever had is a 3 spot gourami and I have to increase the hardness and keep an eye on that. You can’t do much of a scape for this tank though or the fish will get territorial and aggressive.

It is already got two layers of substrate (aqua soil) from the previous scape, so gonna continue to use that for now.

Cleaning wise I do not mine a more dirty look, looks more natural and if the fish are happy, then the fish are happy — that is what matters in the main part for me.

Fair enough, but more time to figure out what style aquascape you want to go down, whether plants or hardscape is predominant, more wood or more stone, or even only one of them.

Yeah, coral sand or aragonite sand should help raise the ph alongside ones like ocean/holey rock should also increase it. Got coral sand and ocean rock in my Lake Tang tank, ph at like 8.7 because of it which the fish love.
Yeah, just some ocean rock would like be he most of the hardscape leaving lots of swimming room but enough space for fish to disappear if needed.

Wish you good luck, sounds like you'll have the chance to set up some stunning tanks!

Thanks for sure!

Yes makes sense. Whatever makes the fish happy is best! You can add the white sand or not whatever you think is best for the little fishies!
