It's probably called particle board now but I tend to use the old name of chipboard.*
The stands I've had over the years have been chipboard/particle board but I've never had any problems with them disintegrating even though I get water everywhere during a water change. My current custom built tank has both cover glasses and a lid, and the lid is made of the same stuff as the stand.
*Edit. Chipboard was just the plain board. I've just remembered the plastic coated chipboard was called contiboard but the big diy chain in the UK stocks something they call furniture board made from melamine faced chipboard or MFC.
