hey guys

right..so im new to the hobby (but have researched tonnes of info and continue to do so).
The problem i have is i really want a pair of german blue rams (colours are amazing)

Ive been advised to "settle" for a pair of bolivian rams (good looking fish also) as they are far easier to keep

Is there another alternative to a german ram that i could also consider getting? (im really after the ones with best colours)

ty for your time

What size tank do you have, and how long has it been setup.

how about apistogramma species?

20gallons is minimum for german blue rams =]

Tank has been setup 4 weeks and is fully cycled with old media. I have a Jewel Rekord 800, 110 litre (25 gallon) tank.

That should be bis enough for a pair. You have to know that they need good quality water. I have a pair that i have had for about three months, they are really beautiful fish.

tyvm. just looking at the apistogramma now, some wonderful coloured ones (really like the purple ones with orange black and red fins)

are these easier to care for than german blue rams? (i have all water test kits (liquid) and am and will be performing at least 1 x 30 % water change every week. my water is soft to moderate and ph is neutral

are there any other beautiful rams like the german blue that i cud manage?

I only looked at three when i was looking, German Blue, German Gold, and Bolivian Rams. The German Blue were the most colorful to me. Sorry I couldn't help any further.

I've seen electric blue rams at my LFS and they're very pretty -- just a domestic strain with bright colors. Downside is, they cost $35 while GBRs are $15 (at my particular store). Cockatoos are also very pretty... think it's apistogramma cacatuoides? I probably spelled it wrong. They have orange/red/yellow coloration, depending on the particular type. Everything I've read and heard says that they're fairly similar to rams in terms of temperament and requirements.

Are you adding ammonia to your "cycled" tank? If there's no source of ammonia, your bacteria will diminish and die off fairly quickly.

tank already has fish in so bacteria dieing is not an issue

ty all for your replies. I decided on a pair of bolivian rams for now. Ill see how i go with them ;-)
