Besides albino bettas, is there any other really rare bettas that exist, like rare mutations or colors? So rare that that they are hard to find or buy.

thats genetics, colours etc. mutation (in bettas) are your short bodies and deformities caused by too much inbreeding

i think ive found a rare beauty today. i bought him from walmart actually. he isnt exactly white and isnt exactly yellow. he is more of a light gold? very beautiful! he is a veil tail and every time i look at him im reminded of an angel(hence his name) its one of those colors you associate with heaven.

Any variation from wild bettas is technically a mutation. Just some such as the colourations and tail types are seen as desirable mutations where as the short bodies and other deformities are seen as harmful ones. That is from a biological/genetic stand point but i get the point you are making Haych, the ones you were refering to are the harmful ones

yeah i suppose, but if we see a yellow one we wouldnt class him as mutated.

saying that, some people may see short bodied etc as pretty

No exactly. I probably just looked at it from a different point of view to you cos i did A Level biology and a sciencey type degree that looked at mutation from a strict angle of anything that deviates from the original is a mutant.

But i agree with you, the desirability of a mutation is in the eye of the person looking at it. Giant bettas would be classed as mutants too but they are seen as desirable by some

I agree. All the tail types are actually a genetic mutation.

As far as rare bettas. I wouldn't say there are too many for betta splendens. I don't keep bettas though. I do know people can pay a lot for the rarer wild type bettas, at least with the importer I follow on line. He brings in A LOT of betta species, both bubble nesters and mouth brooders. None of them are spledens though.

Betta Splendens are a mutant strain themselves. It's the betta Simplex (?) i think that are the true form. Basically the wild ones lol

I'm pretty sure betta splendens are not a completely mutant strain. There are wild betta splendens. They look like plakats, but have the normal greenish wild coloration, suppose to be less aggressive than out hobby strains. Betta simplex can't be the true form, I believe its a mouth brooder.

Yeah i'm probably wrong on the simplex part i think i meant the imbellis. I am useless at the latin part. Basically the "normal" pk tail type and wild colouration is standard the more fancy tail types and vibrant patterns/colours can be considered mutations

Ok let me narrow it down for you guys, I must have confused you. I remember reading about bettas that have naturally curled fins, this is very rare and one of the things I was mentioning. Another would be what shi24137 said, a new betta color that is rarely seen, or new to the hobby.

In the world of bettas fins seem to be what varies most, other than color. Is there any triple tail bettas yet, i've seen double tail. What about bettas missing dorsal fins? Any split bettas, meaning the body literally has 2 solid colors, half of one color on one side, half of one color on the other.
