Hi there.

I have a school of 16 neons, and 6 glowlights, which have inter-schooled, in a 20 gallon tank. I have 3 neons that are quite fat. 1 of those 3 is REAALLLLLLY fat. Like a mother carry 5 twins at once fat. They look healthy and are eating. Water parameters are fine, and to be honest its one of the best looking aquariums I've ever seen, so its not depressed or whatever. Any reasons for this? And what do i do about it? Also one of them thats fat, is swimming on a 45 degree angle down, like hes trying to swim with a life jacket on but cant do it? Whats happening?

is it swimming like this all time or just after feeding??? cause I have silver dollars and one time I overfed them and it was swimming like how you described your neon does....after the next day it's stomach return to its regular shape and is swimming normally again. I think maybe your neon is just carrying a lot of weight on it's stomach, i'll turn down the feedings if you want them to not be fat....hope that helps....pics would also be nice....

hi
whe we started out 9 yrs ago we had neons and i also had a problem with 2 of ours who also became really fat( like a balloon fat)but still were eating & looking quite happy ( i posted in this forum at the time) no one could give me an answer, the fat neons did not live very long and never showed signs of classic 'dropsy' - raised scales like a porcupine etc. we gave up on neons in our first year as they all ended up with NTD or turning into little balloons and we got tired of watching beautiful little fish get sick & die. we ended up getting cardinals instead & hav never had any probs with them.
sorry i cant be of more help.( i posted my fat neon prob with a pic on around 5 different tropical fish forums & never got any answers to the cause or reason or treatment)

Thanks for that.

My dad also used to have neons when he was a kid, about 100 years ago(hahahahahaha), and he gave up on them because they were always getting sick, and were particularly prone to dropsy etc. Not sure what i will do with them. Seperated them into a hospital tank, (more like hospital bucket lol) and have been there for like 3 days or so and are looking "ok" for now, but i hope they pull through. Not sure if i will sell them or what. I also hate it when fish die, i am particularly sensitive when it comes to that. Thanks for your help.

Oh and its always, not just after feeding.

I also have VERY fat neons. They are not sick,I've had them for over a year and never lost any, they're not all fat, just two (I have 15),and they don't have any difficulties swimming.I thought they were maybe just very eggy,at one point they were spawning a lot but not now.
