i was just in my lfs, they had an oscar in a 5 gallon, i asked them if thats temporary and they said no it can live for for a year, i said it cant then he started shouting up the place about he has degrees and im just a dumb customer who doesnt know anything, I was really mad so i bought the oscar off him and gave it to my uncle who has a 150 gallon tank, why do lfs act like this and say and do stupid things?

this is a family forum, please don't bypass the swear filter.

You're right of course but you've solved his problem and given him a bit of extra cash as well by buying it

Hmm very true but like i said yesterday i put fish before money for some reason but it was only 3 pound, the oscar was rather big

I have 3000 oscars in a 200 litre tank, they are £100 each, can you come and buy them please?

Sad thing is....what you paid for the Oscar will probably give the LFS enough to buy more to put in 5 gallon tanks! I can't even walk near the puppies at the LPS because it breaks my heart....I know if I rescue one they will just get more to stick in that icky wire cage!
Your heart is in the right place though! :)

Some lfs's are retards! But, you fell into the trap of "rescuing" the fish and thus giving the lfs the money they so crave. I like where your heart is though.. I'm the same. Costs you a lot of money but you don't care as long as the creature is happy and safe.

I used to be part of a group that did raids on animal farming places. Basements and attics full floor to ceiling, wall to wall of cages and tanks, full to busting with animals, in appalling conditions. Makes me sick.

An lfs near me has a huge pirahna in what looks to be no bigger than a 10 gallon (if that) and they have another fish (looks to me like a large cichilid) in a similar sized tank. You could maybe forgive them if they were in there for a few hours in opening time then moved to a larger tank for the rest of the time, but they're not (notice I said KINDA forgive them, that would still be bad).

you lot have really made me think, im going to go right back up there and check his whole store out (its only 2mins away)

Just come back from the lfs and i was shocked.
In the same tank he had the oscar in he had a paroon shark inside it, crammed to death and cant even turn around, i said 'you know there going to need a bigger tank right'? he said 'No there fine, they dont have to move there just fish. At this point i wanted to punch him but i said to him i would like to talk to your manager, so he brought out the manager who was even worse, The manager said 'whats the problem sir' i told him and then he said he agrees, so he took the paroon shark out and put it into a 20 gallon with a bala shark init, the paroon devoured the bala, i was trying to tell the guy to put it in a much much bigger tank with fish of equal size but he refused to listen.
He said i have to pay for the bala shark, i said 'yeah right' and walked right out of the shop.
The guy has big blood parrots in 10 gallons and he says they can live there for life

What should i do about this shop?
where do i report it to?

All pet shops must be inspected and licenced by the local council - they must also display that licence, which will have the inspector's name on it.

That is pretty appalling behaviour, both in terms of animal care and customer service. My LFS gives bad advice sometimes, but at least the people who work there are nice.

Report it to the council and just stop going there. You might want to rescue more fish - by doing so, you give them more money. That's obviously all they're in business for, not a love of the hobby.

sick aint it. if that was a horse or something they would be stopped from keeping animals for years and fined. but as its (only a fish) they don't seem to care. my lfs keep a oscar in such a small tank i know it couldn't possibly turn around to face the other way. didn't understand it really as they have a massive tank with a very large tinfoil in with nothing else. they should be shot. nice one mate.

I don't know why this lfs is even carrying large Oscars like that. Nobody wants a big Oscar. They want to buy it small and grow it up themselves. When I managed a fs, people used to bring in all kinds of massive fish. Oscars, Pacu, Plecos, even Soft shelled Turtles. I'd walk them around and ask where would they like me to put it? I had some 110 gallon tanks, but we had sellable 4-6 inch cichlids and things in there. I had to tell them no! A fs has to crowd a little based on home tank standards, but that shop near you is ridiculous! I had mostly 20 gallon tanks. My rule was 48 small tetras or 24 med tiger barb types or 12 2" cichlid/gouramis or 6 3" per tank. My losses were nearly nil, and the customers appreciated me not jamming the tanks up. What I did do was try to find customers that wanted the big fish, then let the guys that had the big fish deal with them directly.
I would stop going to that fs. They are not good people, and I think they are purposely messing with you!

Cramming oversized fish into undersized tanks is all part of the fish store tactics to make you, the potential buyer, buy the fish out of sympathy rather than knowing you truely have a suitable setup at home. This post reminds me of the nine Bala Sharks that were bought out of sympathy last week, but on a smaller scale, at least this Oscar only needs a minimum 75 imperial gallon tank as opposed to something resembling a deluxe inflatable garden pool for those Balas.

peacefull protest outside the door for a day or to ... stop there business im sure they'll have a listen to you then you'd only need 5+ people saying its unfair to the fish =]
