Hi everyone,

In response to peediepixie's post about goldfish still being given away in funfairs etc, I have set up a Cause on Facebook inviting people to sign the petition. I was horrified when I visited a local funfair recently with my niece and nephew, and found a stall blatantly giving away fish. There were dozens of the poor things stored in tiny plastic tanks

Hope this helps.

:good:

Any reason the original thread was closed?
I've had several customers come into the shop over the last few eeks who won a goldfish at a local show and had no clue on how to care for them.
A couple of them had been keeping them in a bowl, not realising that this was totally unsuitable. Others have ended up having to buy a tank so that the fish is cared for properly.
The sad thing is, many people are given these fish as prizes and don't realise the care, expense etc. that is involved. They usually take the fish home because the kids have wanted them.
Not forgetting the fact that they are kept in bags for several hours and are subjected to noise, stress etc.
I think the petition is a good idea and will certainly be signing it.

In my experience of funfair operators etc, these people have little respect for you or anyone else so therefore will have none at all for the fish and even if you could get it banned who's going to police it day in day out ? They wouldnt take any notice as these folk believe they are a law unto themselves. Walk round and see how many have car tax on their vehicle-do the police investigate that? Total apathy for the law and a laugh at the rspca aswell!

I closed it because theres no point leaving it open for people to comment. The petition is there for people to read and sign.

This has been posted about in the tropical section and really i dont see the point in opening it up again as it can get heated.

As youve started another thread i'll add a bit to it

As much as forums help to get the word out the people that need to know are here http://www.defra.gov.uk/animalh/welfare/act/index.htm

Its still legal to give out fish at fairs, but you cant to anyone under 16 just as shops arent allowed to. But who is going to police it? You would need the RSPCA to have someone constantly make sure no one under the age gets a fish, which isnt going to happen.

I'll leave this one open for now but will watch it closely.

Surely its worth trying though. Thank you angel-star
