Hi, I was interested in small "sting rays" (sorry but i dont know the proper name) and tank requirements, compatible fish, etc.

Google didn't give me much, so if you guy/gals have any sites or info you think could prove useful, please post them.

Thanks.

Even the 'smallest' stingray will grow to about 12 - 14" disc so there are no rays in a 55 gal for life, there are lots of threads on here about easiest rays for beginners but it may be worth a bit of a rethink

Steve :)

I went to a place the other week and they had a few rays in a tank that i thought was a little small spoke to the guy there and he said 8x3x3 foot min size really

Trouble is a my lfs, they are kept in like 1 per 5/10gallon cube tank, and if people see them in such small tanks for sale how are they to know they ideally need wide 200gallon tanks.

In the shops defence, they are only in the shop for a shortish length of time (or so they say). I still don't agree with it, so don't get me wrong. I wanted a sting ray for my Juwel vision 450 but i think that even this is too small. People like us will just have to admire from afar lol.

In a 55g though, if it was at subtropical temps you can get a Pseudogastromyzon species, which are like mini rays.

Don't they only grow to something like 2" long though?

You say that likes it's a bad thing? At 2" long, they're suitable for most tank sizes.

However they are Rheophiles and love current, and subtropical temps.

thats like saying you see red tail cats in 2ft tanks in shops so they are giving customers the wrong idear

i may be wrong but all fish grow
:D

back to the basic rules resurch every fish before you buy it then resurch it again

get the biggest tank you can then think about stocking it

At my LFS, those who have been to Pier Aquatics, will know that as you walk in there is a huge raised tropical tank on the left, and that has about 5 huge piranaha looking fish a plec the size of a shovel and various other large creatures presumably for sale.

It isn't a bad thing, I was just thinking of them in comparison to a stingray and they are tiny in comparison. I used to have 2 but they just died for no apparent reason.

well peir may have a big holding tank as you walk in the door but as soon as you go into the oddball section every kind of fish are in tanks that are far to small for them

with cats that cant turn around and rays whos disk over laps both side of the tank

i cant say i like the maidhead chain but at least they have big sump tanks to put the larger fish in which is more than can be said for other shops
