Hi There,

I need some help, does anybody know anything about these little creatures?

I have two albino African Clawed frogs male and a female, I don't know much about their history because I just happened to be in the pet shop when their previous owner came in looking to off load them before going away to uni and I took pitty upon them.

From what little she told me about them, I don't think they were cared for very well. She told me the female was "all puffy" and that she used to poke her  convinced this wasn't quite right I did some research on the internet and found out that she wasn't "puffy" she was infact suffering from a serious case of Dropsy, I have been treating this for a while with regular doses of Anti-Internal Bacteria (Aquarium Treatment 9) most of her still looks like she is going to explode at any minute, the poor thing has thighs like space hoppers, but there are patches that appear... shriveled, under her chin has gone down to the point where the spare skin looks like a third lip (no joke).

Their care has been an on going learning process for me, my main concern at the moment though is my females' eye. It's the right one as you look at it (her left), the outter lense and the pupil (the red dot in the middle) on the other eye both appear to be convex, the outter lense on her left is convex but the pupil is flat.

I'm wondering if she is blind in that eye, or if the other one is swollen for some reason, the dropsy maybe?

In other respects she seems fine, she is more active and friendly than the male and they mated a few months ago, produced eggs then ate them. The male has come into season a couple of days ago (the pads on his forearms have gone black) so I'm hoping there will be eggs again, this time I will seperate them.

If anybody has any useful information etc on either the dropsy or the weird eye thing I would be very greatful.

I'll try and get some pictures up.

Do her eyes look like either of these?

It doesn't look like the picture on the bottom from what I can tell.

The top picture however... The eye at the side angle at the top of the picture doesn't appear to have the bulge of a pupil, that's how my frog is, it's completely flat.

I have taken some pictures but they're not very good and you can't really make anything out.

Hi there, welcome to the site :) I've got two of these little beasties and from what your tell us, they weren't cared for properly at all! Clawed frogs grow to about 6", sometimes larger, sometimes smaller, they're not picky eaters but turtle sticks seem to be a favorite food for them. I supplement in frozen blood worms and sinking shrimp pellets to my two some time, each frog should have atleast 10gallons of space, although at a juvi size (0-2.5") a 10gallon will do for the two of them. Watch for canabalisim, as it tends to happen, although they rarely succed, they enjoy earthworms, and when full grown will even eat larger fish.

For more information I recommend going to www.aqualandpetsplus.com, they have a decent section on African Clawed frogs there, along with a lot more information on other frogs, snakes, fish and more :)

Hope this helps

Hi There Ryan,

No I don't think they were at all, before the last ditch attempt to get rid of them at the pet shop, the previous owner said that tried to starve them to death, turned the heater off and so on.

Their tank was cracked on two sides so was only filled with 5/6 inches of water, I have since moved them into a a smaller tank it holds 72 litres but is little over two thirds full so they can surface. They have driftwood, a few plants to hide under and slate platform to bask on, they seem happy enough with their new home.

The previous owner only fed them sinking food pellets for tropical fish, I feed them a combination of the pellets, live brown crickets (when I can get them), bloodworms, meal worms, live feeder fish such as Mountain Minnows, Live Daphnia, Gammarus Shrimp, small frozen fish and the odd household spider / bug.

Here are some pictures;

See what I mean about the serious case of dropsy? I don't know if you can really make anything out, but I tried to get a picture of her eye.

Good photos.
The eye looks like the others in the pictures by ScoutCarcer to my eyes.
They may well be being pushed out by the fluid from the dropsy, the extra pressure can cause them to be pushed out a bit.

Oh and welcome!

ps, great music taste! Slayer rule!

Okay, looks to be a serious case of dropsy MY GOD I feel bad for her :( Also, you maswell get rid of the slate platform as these frogs are full aquatic and are known escape artists. They dry up quickly, and they can die :( Keep the tank about 2/3s full, they can make powerful leaps if they want to.

Also, sucks for the lady who tried to "starve" them to death, these guys can go a fair bit of time with minimal food, they'll eat basically anything, and they're not that picky about temperatures so long as extremes are avoided. Trying to kill them by turning off the heater is just stupid. That lady was just stupid.

Glad to hear they're in a 72litre tank, that's -around- 19gallons US, should be plenty of room for them. Just remember to keep their water VERY clean as frogs can die quickly in dirty water.

Yes, serious dropsy... My two sons have called them "Pinky & The Brain", Can you guess which one is which?.....

The slate platform is fully submerged under the water, they've never made any attempt to escape. The one time I dropped the female on the floor whilst transfering her, she could hardly move because she is so bloated, and the male just doesn't seem bothered about freedom, I've never even seen him jump / leap. I'm assuming that they must be pretty content??

And yes their previous owner was silly, silly and cruel, I think they are lovely little creatures and I like to sit and watch them.

I got this picture of them 'mating' last night..

I've since looked at the males eyes and his pupils bulge out / are convex, so I assume that is 'normal' for them and that the females left pupil being completely flat isn't normal and something is wrong with it.

Slayer are cool, Tool are better \m/-_-\m/

YES GO TOOL lol anywasy... :shifty:

Glad to hear these guys have found a better home, take good care of them and let's hope that the female gets better soon, my fingers are crossed for her!

Oh, and you'll probably never see the frogs make a "leap for freedom" as they do this at night when the lights are out lol. I've tried to catch em in the act but never have, so after I lost my first ACF and found it dried and dead a week later, I changed from a glass conopy (the ones that have the opening in the back) to a screen top. Haven't lost either of my 2 "new" frogs yet :good:

Poor froggy. I've read on other websites when trying to find out why she was bloated about these escape attempts, where people have found them days later under sofas etc dried out and fluffy, one owners frog was so dried out that some of it's toes and webbing dropped off, but apparently they did grow back some time later.

Thats how my first ACF Zombie died. I was new to aquatic frogs and he didnt have a lid. One night I went out to dinner and I never saw my baby again :-( .

Awww....

I don't think mine could escape even if they tried, the female is too fat and the male is too small. The water level is a good 10 inches below the top of the tank and there is a condensation tray to get through before the raised / domed lid which adds another 2/3 inches to the height they would have to leap to get out.

Does anybody know how high they can jump?

And does anybody have any thoughts on my females flat eye?

Thanks.
