The Argos one looks much better, looks more roomy but I didn't check the dimesions, they will love climbing, great pets, very intelligent :good:

Yeah they are/will, that one is smaller if you go by the dimensions :S

Ive just been and checked out fleabay, they have some good priced and large cages on there :good:

Fleabay? ive looked on ebay and couldnt find anything thats decent that would be posted with a deep enough plastic base. If you find anything impressive pm me the link to it.

I think im probably going to use the cage i have atm with the possibility to upgrade later on months down the line.

pets at home do an amazing one for about £200, and you can get it on ebay normally a lot cheaper. please dont get that first cage, it is smaller than my hamsters cage I think.

Having owned every cage posted on this topic at one time or another - this one is the best IMO. It's nice and easy to clean out - reasonably customisable so that you can change it to suit older/less active rats or younger/more acrobatic babies. The access to the inside is good (nothing worse than having to attempt contortionism to clean the cage out!) and the base is nice and deep with a guard as ratties just love to post out their cardboard squares

The only thing is the grills at the bottom, but I just covered mine with a piece of lino and used it as a normal base :)

I would say get the biggest cage for your money but whatever you do, make sure you check a) that the cage is going to be easy for you to keep clean and for you to reach your new ratties if they are a bit scared when they first arrive b) that it's not going to rust into dust within a year OR WORSE stink like rat wee because the material isn't properly protected with powder coating! c) that it leaves at least 2ft squared for each rat you wish to house in it.

This is a good link for working out how many rats to keep in a cage
http://www.fancy-rats.co.uk/information/guides/cagecalculator/

I usually get the result and then minus two (ie. if that calc says you can house 5 rats, I usually house 3 etc).

Good luck in buying your cage :D

I use to work in a pet/aquatic store and personally I would say the ferplast one would likely to be better, the wire framed ones I'm not impressed with ever. It can cause clubfoot with the animals which just isn't cool... they're #40## awkward to put together as well as sometimes the pins don't like up.

However... Ferplast is always overly expensive, I think they are imported from Italy or that might be just the bird cages only. However for a good few bob for a bit of plastic can feel like a hard hit to me. Usually a lot easier to clean out though just unclip the base and make sure the rats are still in the cage and you can place it on the floor (I would usually place them on hard/rough surface like concrete so they can have some time wearing their claws down. You would also find it easier to hang ropes and stuff across the cage (I suggest you look into bird ropes they have clips either sides, rats love running along the ropes).

The one vikiandkev suggested looks reasonable also, especially at that price you're getting more for your money that most other companies offer.

Just don't over stock! I came across someone who had 4 rats in one cage (a very small cage) so I gave him the benefit of the doubt and asked how often he gets them out.... he said never....

Ive since found other cages:
Ive put them in order of ones im thinking of, the first one im thinking about the most.

What do people think of these ones?
Pros and cons for them all please.

Cage 1 on the list - will only comfortably house two rats according to the welfare guidelines of 2sq. ft per rat.

CONS
Personally, I think the accessories are a complete waste of space - they will become soaked with urine and stink to high heaven in no time at all - especially with bucks.
I can't see any big doors - meaning hanging hammocks and cleaning corners of shelves (presuming you will be fitting some more suitable ones in the cage) is going to be a feat of contortion.
Wooden slats on the bottom will need to be removed and sliding trays aren't going to be an ideal floor configuration - although should be all right with a thick layer of shredded cardboard (although this defies the point of the sliding trays!).

PROS
Good bar spacing - suitable for even very small ratties.
That's about all that jumps at me.

Cage 2 - Rene
Will house 3 rats according to 2sq. ft per rat guidelines.

PROS
Plastic accessories - won't have to be thrown out!
Nice deep base for bedding, exclusion of drafts and to stop them throwing the bedding out onto the floor!
Good layout with ramps and shelving - although the wheel will need checking before use - very few companies make them tail-safe for ratties.

CONS
The bar spacing will need checking if you're getting kittens as it looks 1 inch to me - meaning only big does or medium bucks can be kept inside!
Otherwise it's a decent cage at a relatively good price.

Cage 3 - F11 cage
Will house 2 rats.

PROS
Good plastic accessories - these cages are generally very good quality, I had a tall version of this before my oldies got decrepit!
The splash guard is a godsend!
Brilliant access! You can easily reach everywhere in this cage without pulling muscles or swearing!
Wheels are very handy! Hoovering behind the cage won't ever be such a mission as it is when you have to pick up the cage full of fat bucks!

CONS
Larger bar spacing - okay for small does but careful with very young kittens.
Pull out trays and grill are pretty much useful, I covered the base with lino and used it as a normal box-base.

All in all a good cage, but not a terribly cheap price.

Cage 4 - Super Pet
Houses 4 rats.

PROS
Good, durable coating on the bars - if this is like the ones I bought years ago of the same model then they will last forever.
Good accessories - modular as well.

CONS
Large bar spacing.
That one door you see - it's all you get. Cleaning out this cage, re-fitting hammocks and reaching for slightly nervy ratties are all near-impossible missions. I cut extra doors into my cages.
Not a very deep base - ratties do and will kick out their bedding onto your floor.
No wheels - so when they do make a mess, it's not easy to clean it up lol.

All in all, a cage built to last - unfortunately one I never wanted to last when I had it. It's not designed for ease of cleaning at all - and sadly this can make every day shelf wipe-downs a nightmare. I learnt to hate this cage before modding it.

HTH :D

Lol thanx for the info.
Ive seen another cage to but it has wire shelves and ramps, how would i go about "modding" them so the ratties feet are ok? is it as simple as getting some fleece and attaching it to the shelves?
