Now im not planning on putting them in the same cage but im wondering how they will react having their cages nextdoor?

i have a syrian next to my rats and a dwarf russian next to my syrian! XD

There all fine next to each other they might go up to the bars and sniff to begin with but they will get used to each others smell and leave each other alone :)

Ok thanx thats a weight off my mind lol, just been told im not allowed it in my room so it has to go in the living room next to the hammy.

are you new to rat keeping?

if you are they can create quite a stink sometimes!

just a warning if you have it next to the chair you sit in :p

Ash

Nope i have had others before but im getting more soon, if i can keep my bedroom clean(one of dads stipulations if i wana get another ratty) Mums suprisingly keen on the idea  lol she only said to make sure they aint gona be any stink(so basically be an #16##### about cleaning the cage out regularly lol The dwarf hamster is my mums, she did have 2 but he ate his pal so i have renamed him hannibal and its stuck! yay lol

my dwarf hamster started attacking her sister so had to seperate them then the on who got attacked got a tumour and died :( and my other one is very very old like 2 and a half years old so she is like ancient :p

hope they let you keep them in your room i love rats! very fun intelligent animals very underrated by most people i think

good luck :)

We have had rats before and they do make great pets, even the mother in law was sewing hammocks for them

To help keep down the smell try using Carefresh, we had male rats and with that stuff they smelt fine, it's a bit more expensive to buy but its very compressed so you can fluff it up and a bit goes a long way.

Ok thanx for tip on carefresh, my sister found somewhere that sells small bales of sawdust/woodshavings, the type used for small animals, that has lavendar in would this be any good?

Im not actually having the ratty in my room he will have to go downstairs cos my room is right above my parents room and they dont wana be woken, plus i really want one so ill go with their ruling.

dont use sawdust at all for rats and dont use any scented sawdust for any animals it is a very talked about subject and has being linked to respitory problems in small animals like hamsters (the scented stuff) and the normal stuff causes respitory problems in rats i use shredded paper from my moms work for free :D doesnt smell for a good week then needs changing. used to use shredded cardboard dirt cheap just get it from a horse stable or there is someone who deliver to england from scotland huge bale of shredded cardboard i mean huuuuge lasts ages for 15 pound i think.

but please be on the safe side and dont use sawdust some people will say its okay but most will say better safe than sorry

sorry if this comes across a bit in your face its not ment to :)

Its ok its your opinion and i did ask lol thanx for the tips.

Ive decided that im going to feed my ratty nuggets, as they cant pick and choose what they want to eat, and suppliment their diet with extras but what are people's opinions on nugget foods compared to museli type foods?

What toys do people find a huuugge hit with their ratty's? ive bought a scramble net from pets at home thats like a large square piece of rope all "plaited" to form a net that clips to the bars.

i use pets at home nuggets and supplement with fish, greens, treats, at one point dog biscuits (woman from the rattery gave me a big list of good food for them ill try finding it out later)

my girlfriend uses nuggets and musely and they do pick at the museli first and only eat the nuggets when they have ran out of museli

as for toys if you have any old clothes cut them up and sew them into hamocks (or buy old duvets and towels from charity shops and cut them up to make hamocks) thats the cheaper way and a couple of my hamocks are made like that but the ones you buy do look alot comfier :good:

i also have the net which you have mentioned which they used to play on but now there fat and old they dont play as much

dont know if you have checked these out but here are a few websites that sell stuf for you to check out if you like :)

ok thanx

What do people use for floor covering?

My sister uses the wood pellets thats designed for cats in her ferret's cage, would this be ideal?
The pellets expand when they get wet and soak all the moisture up.I know newspaper/printed paper is not cos of the toxicity of the ink.

My dad sells banana chips and i know rattys can have these but he says the chips are sugared, will these be ok as a rare treat? im thinking once a week

i use shredded paper from my moms work its free :good:

those pellets work well by can be expensive and not sure about bananna chips i never heard of those
