Rare Species

In my short time within the hobby ive noticed that a lot of tropical fish are very common. Just wondering if anybody could tell me about any rarer species?

snake heads are rearer i think? iv never seen one in a fish shop.

blue pearl shrimp are fairly rear in the UK... they only entered the hobbie in 2007 (selectively breed)

Depends what you mean by rarer, really, but the less commonly seen species are usually ones that can't be tank-bred and so are imported. Also, there are wild imports and different selectively-bred strains of the commonly-seen species which I would say are rarer, but technically they are the same species.

Very difficult question to answer unless you know what 'sort' of rare fish you're after. Rare could be anything from a monster predator to an unusual-coloured show quality betta

I reckon there are more rare species than there are common ones, in terms of what is commonly found in the trade. Even then, if you look hard enough, you'll usually find what you're looking for somewhere in the country.

What sector are you thinking in terms of? Livebearers, bettas, cichlids, predatory, etc., etc., etc.?

Well I've grown rather fond of my rainbow gouramis in the week that ive had them, beautiful fish, something a long those lines I think

There are plenty of rare fish you could own, but if you're liking Anabantoids then you will end up with a fair few tanks running due to them not really getting along with each other. Sometimes it works out well, but if it doesn't then you will need something in place to move the fish to. Chocolate, Samuri and Liquorice are all stunning species.

There are some rarer livebearers too, consider Halfbeaks or Humpback Limia's. Rarer Cichlids... erm... maybe some of the rarer Pelvicachromis species or some Apistogramma's that aren't commonly seen?

If you like Corydoras, then Gold or Green lazers are less common as are the CW numbered Cories.

When you say Rare fish do you mean in the hobby or in the wild? For example, Red Tailed Sharks are pretty much extinct in the wild but you can go into pretty much any shop and find them

Just saw the post by you about the Dwarf Gourami (as you call them Rainbow Gourami) Which in all honesty are not particularly rare in the wild or in the hobby but for things to go with them you could look at other asian fish, Dwarf Chain loach are a little rare and could be a good option if you have sand and then a rarer barb like Embers, Pandas or Oddesas are always nice
