Hey guys :)

Can you help me out with some questions I have..? Ok..

1) When doing a 10-20% waterchange on my tanks, can I use this water to fill other tanks?

2) What's the fastest time other tank/tanks can be cycled? (If I use my other tanks to help out)

There's bound to be more questions to come...with this fishroom..I seem to be getting stuck/confussed at every turn.

if your suggesting taking the water from one tank and putting it into another that isnt really a good choice from what I can see. Its putting dirty water in with clean water. As for cycling the fastest time is instant if you have some extra filter media around that you can put into a new tank. Without filter media I would say 3-4 weeks. I started my second part of my fishless cycle on the second day and have little to no ammonia from that day on. I used stress zyme myself though.

Yeah using dirty water to help mature a tank isnt really any good, all the good bacteria are in your filters.

To help seed a new tank, you can use 1/3 of your existing filter media and put that in the new filter/s (of course putting new media back in its place). This way you can usually fishless cycle a new tank in two weeks or can instantly add new fish providing you do it slowly and not put a full stock in immediately.

Thanks for that guys :good:

I was thinking more on the lines of chloramine/temp. Say I wanted to get a tank/s ready to go in a few days, I would us 'maintenance' water to fill/part fill the tanks..the rest tap water. This way there will be far less chloramine present..if at all and the temp gets a head start too. Alongside 1/3 mature filter media (thanks for that minxfishy :good: ) and an airstone, this should speed things up. :) Bare bottom tanks will probably be quicker.

There are very rare circumstances where you might use old tank water for a new tank but they are very rare. I am trying to grow green water algae, as food for daphnia, and the used tank water has all the nutrients in it that the green water should need as fertilizers so it makes sense to use it there. Used tank water is also rgeat for use on house plants as a dilute fertilizer. Old tank water for another tank with fish in it is not a good idea under any circumstances that I know of.

Old tank water is useful for moving an ailing fish into QT, if that fish has a reputation for being hard to aclimate, such as some fancy plecs (L18, L46...) ;) Though I agree with Oldman on the whole, old tank water for a new tank and new fish is normally a no-no :good:

All teh best

i think its a person al opinion, as have a friend who swears by using tank water from one to another , and does this alot with his tanks

As long as your water is good quality - i.e. it wasn't needing a good water change (low nitrate) - then there should be no problem.

You should be using dechlor, by the way!
