I got a Royal Ram yesterday, when I got home he didn't look too good so I put him in a spare tank for him to recouperate. Now all his fins look erm I don't know how to describe it like they are desolving and theres only straggly bits left where his fins were. I've put some protazin in the tank to try and help and he seems to have perked up but still hasn't eaten anything.

Anyone any ideas what wrong I think it might be fin rot but since I've never actually seen fin rot I can't be sure, is there anythin else i can do to try and help my little Ram?

Same thing happened to my rams last week. I treated with melafix for a week, which did absolutely nothing :/ Unfortunately they both died :byebye:

sure sounds like finrot.... unfortunately once it reaches the body of the fish it usually dies... it probably contracted it whilst in the lfs tanks as they fight amongst themselves
treat with a finrot medication and make sure you do lots of water changes... adding only enough medication for the amount of water you have removed for the water change.... good luck :)

Yep its fin rot, and you'll need to use Myxazin (spelling?) if you want to stick to the Waterlife range as Protozin is for Whitespot only I think. Be sure to leave the recomended time between treatments if you change, I think its 48 hours. Good luck.

Im not sure if this is finrot -_- . It seems to kill the fish too quickly to be that. My ones died about 3 days after the first signs :/ . Any ram experts out there who could shed any light on this ?

Unfortunately, rams are highly sensitive to changing/poor water conditions. New rams are stressed out easily, and are often prone to fin rot. But fin rot don't kill in 48 hours, even with increased temperature. My rams survived a nasty case of fin rot.

Chances are rams were killed by something else. What are your water parameters like? Did you happened to see any red streaks along afflicted area? If so, it's more likely that 'red pest' killed it. You sometimes don't see the ulcers and red streaks until too late. It often causes secondary infection like fin rot. What's odd is that protazine seems to have helped the fish. So it could also have been internal parasite. In any case, it seems to me that the fish were already ill when you got them.

BTW, if you have a true bacterial infection, don't use protazine. It's meant for killing parasitic protozoans. Use, Myxazin instead, as kev_kb mentioned. It works really well, and fish seems to tolerate it much better. You could also use melafix to help the fish heal.

My water is more or less perfect at the moment and I didnt see anything other signs on him even when dead.
