But with regards to the minnows I don't want people thinking I don't care for their welfare. I bought them at the very beginning of my fish keeping journey and didn't know they preferred the colder temps. But they have never shown any indication of stress or Ill health and have even scattered eggs before.
The effects will be long term as higher temperatures increase the rate of their metabolism, amongst other things. Given the species you have, I would personally keep the tank at 25 C, but that is a personal choice and a compromise for both species. There are other potential problems with mixing species as you have, amongst which is water parameters, activity level, set-up requirements, etc. WCMM are one of the species that normally have better colouring in cooler water. What's done is done, and unless you plan to split them up, you are still probably providing better care than either species would be receiving in the average home, which is saying something about the poor averages. On the other hand, if someone were to offer to take one or the other off your hands for a perfect environment, then I would consider it seriously.

Regardless of the above, what I would really base my opinion of your care for the welfare of fish is whether you would seed and fish-less cycle or fish-in cycle your next tank as ammonia and nitrite poisoning have considerably more effect on the long-term welfare of the fish than water parameters that are a bit off.

For any future tanks, after considerable reading on here, I would fish-less cycle and move across filter media etc.

But new bigger tanks are way down the line, my current goal is managing my current ones and continuing to soak up knowledge on here. Hence this thread.

If target feeding is difficult i use a turkey baster to get food to my less assertive fish which seems to be working so far!!! .
Defo looks like a GBR to me. Hope yours is not as bossy as my pair hence i call them the Kray twins ..... And they are only about an inch big!!! Lol.
I keep my tank at 28 degrees and so far all seems fine with them however their are others who state they should be kept in higher temperatures which GBR's can do so i will leave it upto you to decide!!!
Couple of months with some good water quality (GBR's are very particular & MUST have excellent water quality) and good feeding then fingers crossed it will be a stunner!!!

Hi I moved the WCMM's and nudged it up to 29 degrees. And they seem to be fattening up nicley (soaked food method) I'm fortunate to have 0 ammonia nitrate and 5ppm nitrite in the tap water. So 30% a week water changes are a gooden. And no they're only interested in each other but stay away from the angel. :)
