I read that 1 tsp per 5 gallons should raise the ph..

The tank I'm dealing with is 40g.. I put about 5 tablespoons in as I know that it will only raise the ph to 7.6 or whatever, no matter how much you put in..

but the ph is only at like 7.2

Does it take awhile to change the ph?

Why are you trying to raise your pH?

There is much more to know about what is going on in your tank before you should be attempting to adjust your pH. Here is my recent blog about establishing your tap/source water baseline. http://goldlenny.blogspot.com/2007/05/find...r-baseline.html

Once you know what your starting point is, then we can figure out what might be changing your pH and other water parameters in your tank so you will know what to do to keep your pH stable.

If your tank pH is 7.2, that's a very good starting point for the majority of fish and critters. If you are trying to make your water harder, that can be done but it does not necessarily mean changing the pH (although harder water generally has a higher pH).

Let us know what you are trying to do and why and we can help better.

This site will give you more info on raising your KH using Baking Soda but Baking Soda is not necessarily the best thing for raising pH, but it will do it a little. http://dataguru.org/misc/aquarium/calKH.asp
