Ive been looking at profiles on rainbowfish lately on the net, especially dwarf neons and boesmani rainbowfish. Ive done alot of research and was planning to buy a small school of one of these types, and i called the store. They answered and talked to me about them for a bit and at the end i asked how much they costed. $10.00 EACH!!! I couldnt believe it, and I am so dissapointed as I really wanted these fish, they are so colorful and lively. Anyone have any suggestions for me? Could I get one boesmani or one dwarf neon? I know they are schooling fish but has anyone had any experience with keeping them alone in a tank? Suggestions needed and appreciated!! THANKS! :/

They are spendy little buggers aren't they? I really wouldn't go less than 3 of one kind though. I have bosemanis and love them. So, save up... I don't think you'd be sorry after spending your money on them!

Oh your going to hate me for this. I found Neon dwarf rainbows for $6 ea and I am getting 15 in about 10 hours :p

nice, am currently looking for a pair of rarer fish, they are worth the money as they look ace its just a case of watching out for them dieing! that would be a *****!

if you have an extra tank and do some research, you could buy a mop with rainbow eggs from aquabid. they guarentee at least 30 live eggs. i couldn't get bosemanies and was going to go this route and sell the extras to the lfs. but didn't cause my lfs finally was able to get them in. i think they were about $30 for one mop

Oh rainbow fish..I used to have one! The woman working at petco had NO idea what kind of fish it was (because it didn't have a little tag, you know, the ones that line the bottom of the tanks) and she ended up charging me only a BUCK for it. And I went to go get more but they finally found out what they were and going for 10 dollars again. Shoot :p

Any member of the rainbow family will make an excellent additiontion to any community aquarium.

If you want to view them at their best then you need at least 3, 1 male to 2 females. This ratio will ensure that the male "displays" for the attention of the females.

I have 3 neons, they are very active and a joy to watch, its even funnier when my otos decide they want to shoal with them.

This is awesome. I finally found a good store to buy neon rainbows. "Super Pet". All the other stores had neons and boesmanis for 10-12$, and super pet still had boesmanis for 12$, but rainbows for only $6.50! So im going to get some, just not sure how many, probably 5 or 6.

Excellent news

I'll post some pics of mine in the pictures forum for you so you can see just how cute they are

The next time i have a free tank i am going to devote it to rainbows. I think they are beautiful. I especially like the boesmani and the new guinea (sp?). I found a place in Los Angeles that sells "6 packs" for 32 dollars. they charge out the wazoo for shipping but will arrange pick up. As i drive down to San Diego once a month or so I think i will get some the next time i pass through.
