Hi all,

Today...err..yesterday ( I work night shift so my days are messed up), I was at a new LFS (they're really starting to grow on me) gettting prices for a new tank, oggling the fish, and gettting a pair of tongs for planting, etc. While I was there, I saw these beautiful silver fish with yellow and black tipped fins. the label listed them as Rainbow-celebese. After some discussion with the gentleman who owns the place concerning their habits, tank requirements, temperment, etc., I decided to pick out two of them. One is a stunning male and the second is a slightly more subdued female (?).

I took them home, and placed them in my five gallon guppy tank (After letting them acclimate for awhile that is). The poor things were completely freaked out. First they zipped around the tank (good thing I had a lid :( ) and then they went straight to the bottom and tried to hide in the gravel. Poor things kept hiding from me everytime they saw me.

To ease their stress, I turned off all the the lights and let them be. I checked on them before I left for work around 8:30pm (I bought them around 12:30 -1:00 pm) and they seemed to have settled down a little, if still a bit skittish, They were still hiding in the plants, but hopefullyt they'll come out ove tthe next couple of days. Oddly enough, the male guppy (I have a pair) was hanging out with them at the bottom of the tank when last I checked. I'd swear he was trying to school with them...even though their like one and a half times his size

Anyway, to get to the point of my questions, I was reading up on my new fish tonight and all seemed well. I verified that they were indeed peaceful fish, that they were weren't going grow any larger then I had been told, that they were schooling fish (I am wanting/planning to get a few more once space permits). Everything I was reading was following exactly waht my LFS had told me. Until I came acoss a couple sites that were sayingthat this a BRACKISH fish. The majority of sites said that these fish were sensitive to water conditions, but onyl a few said anything about them being brackish and at the dealer they were in the freshwater tanks! Does anyone have any input on this?

Oh, and before anyone lays into me about putting them in five gallon tank, I don't plan to leave them in there. I'm looking into getting a 10-15 gallon tank soon. I was tentatively planning to stock it with at least four of the celebese and transfer my three cories over (if I got the fifteen). If they truly are brackish fish, I will have to take them back to the LFS because I definately want to move my cories to the new tank.

While not what i would term as a brackish fishthey do indeed benefit from the addition of salt to their water, about 2 tablespoons of sea salt in a 5g will be enough. Your guppies will be fine with it too.

What kind of benefit would there be? What kind of harm could come to them if I don't add it? It seems that they've acclimated themselves to a none brackish enviroment (not by choice I'm sure), and personally I'd like to keep them in fresh water if it won't cause undue stress upon them. I really was hoping to put these in a new tank with my corys and I know that won't happen if I start adding salt to the water

Most fish that come from a brackish water can survive in FW for short periods but will become ill and die eventually, i believe that the salt plays some part in brackish and marine fishes kidney funtion so it is essential that it is added to the tank. FW fish however do not need the salt and many like corys as you know tolerate it badly. Looks like you will either have to have two tanks or make a few changes to your plans, or just return the celebes rainbows to the shop.
