Many people keep them together, but what is your favourite. And if you could give a reason why they are

I cant decide which ones to keep, thet both seem so similar.

Hi,

I'd go with a male rabbit or a pair or more female guinea pigs. I've had loads of rabbits and guinea pigs over the years and find they both make great pets but DO NOT keep them together. They don't speak the same language, rabbits can break a guinea pigs spine with a kick and they harass them and try and try to mate with them. They eat different foods, guinea pigs need vitamin c daily and lots of fresh veg which will give rabbits diarrhea (sp)

Guinea pigs on average. live 5 years though i have had them live 7. Males can be kept in pairs if they are together from a young age or if an adult is introduced to a 4-6 week old baby but introductions of 2 males when they are adults usually won't work. Females can be kept in groups, i had 11 together at one point.

Rabbits can live to be teenagers, my oldest was 11 when she died. Unmated females usually live longest. I personally think rabbits are best kept in male female pairs with the male being castrated. Males will fight when adults, females are sometimes ok sometimes not.

Rabbits need bigger cages with more room to run around. They both need garden access. A good way to make cheap big cages is on www.cavycages.com the cubes are available from ARGOS.

I have 4 guinea pigs at the minute and they are  they make cute squeaking noises. whatever you decide on get it from a breeder or rescue centre where it will be well handled from a young age. Never buy a pet from pets at home they are overpriced and usually come with free mange mites.

I agree with Emma - and think it's much of a muchness and personal choice whether you go for a rabbit of guinea pigs. They are very different and you need to do your homework about their requirements etc. and then decide. Just keep in mind that many rabbits need regular vets visits to have their teeth clipped, as they continually grow. The majority of rabbits are fine, and their naturally teeth wear down as they chomp on things - but some don't. Some people even permanently have the two front teeth removed (may seem cruel, but perfectly legal in the UK).

My personal preference would be for guinea pigs - they are just so very

Suffice to say, I've seen the results of guinea pigs and rabbits cohabiting, and it's gruesome

I have not kep any of these, but I do take care of them at the pet shelter I volunteer at. And though rabbits are usually sweet, I was bitten pretty bad by one of the females, so I have a slight aversion to rabbits now. :p

As for guinea pigs, I find them cute, they are small and more easily managed, can be kept at lower costs, and they're less frightening to pansies like myself.

I have only ever owned one rabbit but she was fantastic! Fair enough she thought she was a dog and was the size of a jack russell but was a great pet. I must admit tho she could be a bit agressive and would attack you for chocolate I was constantly covered in scars! but she wasnt afraid of anything Anybody seen Watership Down? "Dogs aren't Dangerous!!!!" thats me girl! Attacked a Staffie and an Alsation! But had so much character! Would only wnat another rabbit if it had that kind of attitude again! Would need it in our house!!

I'm not overly keen on Guinea pigs have lived with a girl who had 3 and the constant noise was irritating also tho the fact that she let them crap an pee allover the furniture and generally wasnt very hygenic with them I was put off. I have looked after my neighbours rabbit and guinea pigs and got a lot more enjoyment of playing witht he rabbit found that the GP's were only interested in food and the rabbit was loving the company!

:rip: Goldie!!! many times bitten and never forgotten!

Hi
Our house has seen both of these and my personal pref. was my daughters rabbit which we only lost recently...it was a male and while working as a vet nurse at the time had him desexed young..he never lived in a cage ( I don't think he knew he was a rabbit) and I live in the country..he never ran away or even left our property and lived with 9 dogs ranging in size from a Rotty and a Chow Chow down to a Foxie X and 19 cats and was not bothered by any. He was very clean and when he wanted to come in he would rattle the screen door. He was personality Plus and would greet visitors at the door. He was almost 12 years old when he passed. I also must agree the power in there hind legs can cause damage or kill a Guinea Pig if kept together....when he was not in the mood to play with the other animals he would boot them to leave him alone.

My fav has to be male bunnies - they are sooo affectionate, girl ones can be, but ur never get more love from them. I had a really fluffy male, he was just the most affectionate little thing ever!

I've also had an indoor male bunnie, he was always asking for cuddles. I tried to teach my female to be an indoor bunnie, but she just wudnt stop chewing things!

I have found that rabbits like people more then Guinea Pigs. Our rabbit loves to come play with us and will seek us out to play. He also loves his toys and will play by himself for hours! The pig on the other hand does not like to be picked up, does not like to hang out with us and does not play much. Both have a huge cage 4'x2' and the rabbit uses every inch of it where the pig hides in his house and yells at us when he thinks his dish needs more food. :X

Thanks for all of your advice!!! Much appreciated

Im still pondering over which type to get but when I have decided I should be getting them in April :D

Poll Vote: It seemed to favour male guinea pigs at first but it has evened out as the time when on.

Thx All

Hi,
just thought I'd add my views too as an owner of many guinea pigs and rabbits over the years.
I now have just 7 guinea pigs and would have to say that I prefer them to rabbits. Personalities vary so much (in both bunnies and pigs) but I would say that my two boar guinea bigs which are home bred are the most friendliest and laid back creatures you could wish for. I bought two female guinea pigs to start - one was SO friendly right from the word go - while the other has remained reserved.I also have another 3 females who I love to bits (such gentle little souls) but who are no where near as people-orientated as the first sow. They can vary so much.
Before the guinea pigs I had always kept male rabbits - they were allowed in the house up until we got the dogs - they were cute too! The last one (Harry) I found in his cage one morning in a terrible state - he'd had some kind of fit. The outcome was he was rushed to the vet for an over night stay and an injection which cost me £100 - I ended up having him PTS a day later. Kind of put me off rabbits!!!!
I guess it is personal choice really. I just love the colours of g pigs and their little expressions...aw!
:) :) Remember Guinea pigs will need bathing and trimming if long haired, also nails clipping regularly (not hard to do) Good luck!

I would have to go with the Guinea pig. Purly for the noises that they make. Two squeeks for yes and lots for no and anything else. There is nothing like the noise they make when you produce a juicy leaf of an type of green vegetable.

Plus baby guinea pigs are the buisness!

I say male rabbit for TWO reasons. First, unlike guinea pigs, rabbits don't squeak/talk/squeal and second male rabbits can't get pregnant :D

Apparently I'm the only one, but personally, I've never much liked rabbits. I'm not a huge guinea pig fan either, but they're better than rabbits! :p
