Well, is it worth the aggro? I normally use a 'tapsafe' type product which is fine, but just wondered if there is any greater benefit from using R.O. You can pick up units quite reasonably off t'internet nowadays.

Not unless you have something wrong with your water that warrants its use.

RO water has no minerals in it so you have to add them back in before it can be suitable for fish.

For sensitive fish it is of great benefit

Edit. Normally a 50/50 mix is the way

I have rams, tetras and discus, and my tap water is WAY too hard for them. RO is the only way. I usually mix 1 part of tap water with 3 parts of RO water.

In all my years in the tropical fish projects I have never added anything to tap water, just pure tap water, with a bit of warm water from the kettle when the tap water is over cold. Never had any problems. Comes down to the hardness of your water were you are. Buy a tap safe water tester and then you will know how hard your water is.

This does ignore the problem of chloramine, which in high enough concentrations can do the filter in.

I use R/O because i keep electric blue rams, and i used to keep discus. I find it eliminates most of the algae in your tanks to and keeps the water crystal clear. :good:
