I dont know if we are fully understanding this, but from what I read, when you use an R\O system for discus, you STILL have to put filtered tap water into the tank because the ro water is SO pure. So what is the point? Why not just use the filtered tap water (Filtered meaning like a brita water purifier that goes right on the tap)

Im not an expert at this but my friend breeds Discus so I know a good deal. Pure R/O is very unstable and the pH can crash within hours if put into a tank with fish. R/O water is mainly for people who are using it to breed Discus. However if you have great city water you dont need an R/O for you Discus to breed. So if you want to breed Discus and dont have the best water an R/O is a must.

You don't 'have' to put tap water back in with R/O water. There are several products you can buy that restores the mineral balance. I use Kent's R/O right. The measurements afterwards are still much lower than my tap water.
