I bought a aquaclear 30 for my 20gl. tank, that i am planning to make into a planted tank. The tank is in my bedroom a the aquaclear filter is too noisy and makes a really annoying sound :grr: . So what filters r quiet and will work for planted tanks?

I haven't had any Aquaclear filters but they are supposed to be good. My Whisper filters are quite except when the water gets low and it makes a little splash into the tank. Of course, some people find the sound of water trickling to be releaxing. For a totally quiet filter, look into canisters. My Fluval filters are 100% quiet. You can't really even hear them when you are right beside them.

You should get the filter that I have for my long 20 gallon tank. Its a Whisper power filter 40 and it is really quite and keeps my water stats in perfect conditon even with a pleco and 7 tetras but of course I vacum clean it which helps also. This so far is the quitess filter I own but am going to be setting my 55g up and it came with a penquin bio filter 350 and I'm going to see how quite it is once I get the tank up and running.

I think the bio wheels are a little more noisy (don't have any just thinking of how they work) since the water would create a splash back into the tank. But as I said before, some people find that relaxing and don't really consider it noise. I do agree that the whisper filters are quiet in the way they run although the Whisper 10s n my betta tanks do have a buzz/hum to them.

I have both Aquaclears and Whispers. What I like about the whispers is the outake is deeper so there is less of a water trickle noise when the water level drops. The ultimate would be a Fluval or Eheim canister.

The ultimate would be a Fluval or Eheim canister.
I run 2 Fluval 304s on my 75 gallon and they are totally silent. Not even a peep except if something gets over the surface skimmer and it starts sucking water but that's just the skimmer and not actually the filter.

I think i will try a whisper filter and see how that works. The aquaclear filter i bought works great but it's the grinding sound of the motor that annoys me, and i am not a heavy sleeper :/ .
thank for the help :D

I have a Fluval 2 Plus in my 20UK Gallon... very quiet... so long as you don't use the 'venturi' adapter (which is a load of pooh anyway). The filter itself is near on silent.

Also once you get the whisper filter be sure to run the 2 filters together for a couple weeks so the bacteria can build up in the new filter.

As already stated, I would use the Fluval 2 internal filter. Since you are putting plants in your tank an internal filter will work best for you. The hang on filters will agitate the water surface too much. Not what you want for a planted tank. The internal filter is great for planted tanks because you can direct the flow and adjust the flow rate.
