Is it normal for the wood to “stain” the water ? i have washed out the wood beforehand for 3 days before I put the wood in, the water isn’t REALLY brown but it’s a light tea - like color. Is it safe for the betta fish??

Betta fish and other fish like tannins, and they are known for having benefits. But if you don't like them in the tank you can remove them, it won't harm the fish either way.

Mopani wood is known for releasing a ton of tannins, so even if you soaked it it probably will still release some. If you put activated carbon in the filter that will get rid of it.

The wood could release tannins for a week, month, year or not stop at all.

I just did my weekly water changes and after about a month the wood in my tank stopped releasing

Hello. The mopani wood in this tank kept the water a slight amber color for several weeks. This is a 55 gallon tank and there are two larger pieces of the wood in it. I changed half the water every week or a bit more often. There are 18 giant Danios in there. I didn't hear any complaints about the amber color of their water. Only kidding, they can't talk.

10 Tanks (Now 11)

Driftwood releases tannins and it's completely normal. If you do big regular water changes, they will dilute the tannins and after a while the wood should hopefully stop releasing tannins.

I have what think is 30 gallon tub in the yard under a gazebo in shade with endlers , it has mopani wood which over a year now continues to leach .

No filter with resins which of course would suck that up but with weekly water changes and lots plans it leaches like it did from first week.

Thank you! As long as it’s not harmful to the fish Im not concerned , but will do some water changes over time so the color doesn’t exaggerate.
