Ive had a guppy for quite some time (couple months) and his/her friend died (month or so ago). I want to put some mosquito fish w/ him/her in the tank, for breedin purposes. i wuz researchin online and found out that he/she might be a gurl when i thought it wuz a boy! now im nawt sure to put boy or gurl mosquito fish in w/ it, for fear thet might beat up each other. PLZ HELP! Heres its description: wide flat yellow and black patternd tail, w/ half a white body near the face but the onther half red near the tail. Also, i think the other guppy died becuz it wuz poisoned. my current guppy is kinda mentally retarted cuz whenever i feed it or tap the tank it flips out and swims in circles. it and its fellow guppy were in a diffrent tank b4 and it wuz very dirty. anyways i question whether i should put fish in with him now. also, would a guppy/mosquito fish crossbreed even work? I need these questions answered plz and ty! any advice u could give me is fine. ty!

P.S. The guppy is a fancy guppy, if that helps 2 answer

I need a pic or a better description of the anal fin to help you sex it!
I was never aware mosquitofish can hybridise with guppies and I really doubt it! Are you sure the info is correct? Where did you hear this?
I'm not sure about the fish going "retarded" as you put it but it does sound like it to me...unusual though!

I cant give a pic i dont hav a cam... SORRY! some ppl on threads i hav read hav said that mosquito fish/guppy cross breeds did exist... but im not exactly sur. i think ill just get some guppies for it. maybe it needs a frend :D anyways i think i can find a pic like it on the web somewhere..... give me 10 minutes... ty 4 ur help, but i still need more help (and so does my fishie lol)!

Ah well I will look into the cross-breeding thing.
I can't say for definate that it needs freinds but it sounds likely as livebearers are extremely social and even though quite individual most of the time they do like to be kept on threes or fours (or more if possible) so it may be that you are right :D

I have this picture I copied off someone to help with the sexing if it will help
The red blodge is the gravid spot but don't worry about finding this just look at the anal fin!

guppys and mosquito fish will not not crossbreed when you say mosquito fish do you mean a gambusia Species
if so they will nip the fins of the guppys and can end up killing them.

There we go I thought they couldn't cross breed...besides mosquito fish are vicious little buggers!
Well it depends on the size of the fish in question really but if it is female there will be a definalte fan shaped fin there of any size! You would be able to tell really from the info in the picture if it was!
As its male I would get around 3 females to keep it company as other males might not do any good for his already nervous state and if you get 1 or 2 females teh constant pestering might finish THEM off so it needs to be around three!

yeah its clasification technical jargon about the "family" of the fish...not helpful at all really to use words like that which not everyone understands.
Basically there are other fish like the mosquito fish that could be called its "cousins" if you wanted to simplify it and he/she reckons that they might cross breed instead of the mosquito fish.
As far as I was aware it is only endlers (look them up on the "aquarium wiki! for a definition - its a good site!) who can crossbreed with guppies and if I were you I would just breed guppies and keep it simple untill you get into it a bit better after like a few months!

Ok..... heres a pic i found on Yahoo that looks mostly like him..... except 4 the tail. his tail is wider and yellower
