Questions About Planted Tanks

As long as you keep the water level in the tank above the outlet on the HOB, they dont make any noise really. It's only when the water level in the tank drops that it'll start making a noise when you'll hear it splashing.

Also, that site has got the filter labelled as an Elite Stingray, but it's the mini.

Yah I noticed that, I just figured they used a diff name for australians LOL.

The reason for this tank is I love experiments, and love to try new things, so I just want to see if I can make it work in a 6l tank. If it dosnt work, well I'll bring down the old 20g and move everything over into it, The fish would be moved well before the ammonia levels rise to a point where its obvious the tank isnt working. I'm also going to attempt to fishless cycle the tank, though considering the size I'm not to confident on it.

Edit- this tank is the same size as mine (well almost mines 6.7l) it ahs the intrenal mini filter I've been looking at in it

We also don't have freshwater shrimp here.

Hey mate, I am looking at setting up a 18l (4.76gal) nano at the moment, and live in Sydney. I noticed that you live in the Hunter, which is fairly close to Sydney.

In the creeks in the national parks around where I live there are hundreds of thousands of fresh water shrimp, they only grow to about 20mm though, and I am not sure how much they will do to control algae, but I will be trying them when I get mine set up in the next couple of weeks.

I am struggling to find a light that will give me the 3WPG I am looking for, best I can do is the 11W flourescents on ebay......45cm is such an odd length for a tank!

LOL we've got those at our pet store their "extendable lights" no idea how they work but you make them to the size if your tank, the smallest they can be is 12" the biggest 18 inch. From what I could tell whne I first looked at them you put whatever tube you wnat in them, they came with 25w lights. I was lukcy with lighting finding the 13w light on ebay was a real score

Sydneys actually almost three hours away, I'm also agaisnt taking things straight from the wild, so it wouldnt really work for me

Sorry for continually bringing this back up.

Anyways I've been looking at filters some more. At our LFS they had the filters I'd been looking at set up. The poor fish were being brown around everywhere, in one tank the actual decoration had been lifted by the current and was stuck on the side of the tank. The tanks were small 6l tanks like mine. Anyways i didnt like the idea of what that would do to my plants.

So I did some digging in our fish draw at home, and I dug up an old air pump rated for 150l an hour (I highly doubt it but if it does half that I'm happy). Anyway I was thinking of buying a sponge filter casing, packing it with bioballs and filter fibre and using that instead. It works out way cheaper as well, which the miser in me likes LOL. So I think I'll order the sponge filter, if it dosnt work I can always buy the HOB filter and ahve a fiddle with it, but I'd rather try the sponge filter first.

Oh and re the subtrate, after visiting 3 successive stores I've given up, theres no way in heck I'm painted $20 for a measly kilo of natural looking fine gravel LOl. So I'm going to use black and pink sparkly gravel we have from when i went through an obsession with pink and redoracted my Betta tank to match.

With the heater, I'm going to test out our 25w on the tank. The pet store did have the mini heaters at $30 a pop. Also no chance LOL, a 100w heater costs the same amount.

Gah I always forget to sya something LOL, Further research on the air pump says it does 150l of air per hour, how much circulation would I be looking at?

Well I finally located java moss, and have ordered it off ebay, still no hits for java fern though, I think I'll need to give up on that one.

Oh with the foxtail can it be planted as well as free floating?
