Ok just got my new APS 1000EF Plus!!!! Im so excited, now Im looking at how Im going to seed it, and I cant really see how the water flows thru all the filters, which tray should I put the mature media into. Also, since Im splitting my 1 main tank into 2 tanks, would splitting my mature media into 2 be safe to have the fish in right away, since Im basically splitting my fish load in half as well? Thanks guys.

The water goes down through that sort of 'tunnel' and then back up through the media, so your mature media needs to go in the bottom tray.

You should be fine to put fish in right away if you're using your old media; just feed lightly and test often for the first few days to make sure the bacteria have 'taken'.

The tunnel is for the UV light to sit in...

Well, it is for the 2000, which is the one I have.

I wonder about this too, pretty much every time I open it for maintainance.

yeah well i guess that would make sense for the flow to go down that tunnel right past and around the UV light, since the water has to cycle past it somehow, and then thru the bottom tray back to the top. it looks like most ext filters works this way so i put my mature media in the bottom tray. just did some major rescaping, i hope it turns out as expected.

I know that is where the UV light goes, but the 1000l version doesn't have a UV, so it must be there for some reason!

interesting. I guess I imagine it working "behind the scenes" I dont expect to see visually any difference, I just have the peace of mind that its killing anything in the water. On another note, Im amazed at how clear my water looks now, its wonderful! the old filter just couldnt keep the water clean like this one. Im thinking about changing media styles in my old one to see if it does a little better.

If you are actually splitting the filter media and the fish biological load into equal parts, you should indeed be able to split the media and the fish the same way and expect both tanks to be fully filtered, from a biological filter perspective. What you do not say is which part of each filter will be used where. Different parts of your existing filter will be better biological filters than other parts. If you do not remove things proportionately from each part of your filter, the results may not be the same as we might expect. At the least keep track of both tanks' chemistry for a while to make sure that your assumptions were correct.

I have the Aps 1000 i got the sponge from my old jewl 70 tank cust it into 9 35mm squares and put 3 in each tray....the filter is on full steam ahead cycle according to my logs as i added alot more bio rings
