Hi. I was wondering if there are any carnivorous oddball fish that wouldn't get too big for a freshwater thirty gallon. I know alot of the oddballs get huge but I was hoping there might be some that could fit comfortably in one. Any help would appreciated.

You can get Dwarf Puffers, or South American Puffers.
Brown Puffers reach around 6", but this is strictly a solitary fish as it will eat anything in the tank.

Theres also the Black Ghost, but I think they can get rather large.

You could go brackish and get 2 Green Spotted Puffers or a few Figure 8 Puffers....

To big for a thirty gallon.

You could try a species of sleeper Gobie like Mogurnda Mogurnda. Or one of the small Asain Spiny Eels like the Peacock Eel.

There are hundreds of species that fit your requirements but the trouble is finding them in the fish stores.

Some reasonably common ones to look out for are

Morgurnda morgurnda or Morgurnda adspersa, purple striped or purple spotted gudgeon (4")
Chaca chaca, frog mouth catfish (7")
Channa bleheri, rainbow snakehead (8")
Chana orientallis/gachua, ceylonese green snakehead (8")
Dwarf pike cichlids like Crenicichla reganni or Crenicichla notophthalmus 4 to 6 inch)
Monocirrhus polyacanthus, south american leaf fish (4")

Plus there are many more less commonly seen ones like rainbow wolf fish, butis butis, monster fish, and so on.

Some of them are single specimin only fish while others can be mixed with others of their own kind in species tanks or if you dont mind a bit of carnage and trial and error you can make aggressive communities up, just remember that the smallest fish must be too large to fit into the largest mouth and that if a fish has big teeth it will probably use them

Mogurnda mogurnda, purple spotted gudgeon :D

Isn't that awesome? He begs for food, and as you can tell by his stomach, gets it :p They can get to about 5 inches in a 30 gallon, but possibly more if given a larger tank. Good luck finding one
