He may cruise the tank from time to time, checking for stray eggs or predators,be careful not to let him see you, he will eat the eggs if he feels threatened.

I was just curious about this. My betta is really use to seeing me and most of the times if he sees me he will swim up to the side of the tank closest to me and stay there. Would he still feel treatened if he saw me near? Right now he is in my dorm so I'm the only person he ever sees. He is a feisty little thing and the first week I had him, he would puff up at me all the time, but now he doesn't do it any more. Do you think he will still destroy the eggs?

Also, what type of female should I get. All the females I see look half dead (there're walmart fish so I don't know if that's natural) Should I find a female as lively as my male?

You can't ever tell what those fish are like becasue they are all cooped up. Mine was not very lively, but when I put it in a tank it perked right up. :D

Not sure about the egg-eating thing.

ok now I'm being random. What color female would be good to breed with a blue and red betta?

Whichever you like. It depends on the color or colors you want the fry to have. It also depdns on whether fin variations, spots, and colors are dominant or recessive. These will affect how your fisk look and how many of each type you will get.

Another thing. I've raised guppies and I know the female is pregnant when she is fat and he belly is black, but what about female bettas? When do I know she is ready for a male? Or can I put a female in with a male anytime as long as he has a nest?

There is a pinned article in the betta forum on breeding. Read up on breeding. You'll find the information very useful, and it might answer questions that you haven't thought of yet.

And the answer to your question is that you should condition them first (more info in the pinned thread).

before you starte breeding make sure you are absolutely sure about what you are doing and that you have the time, funds, and space to be takeing on this task, this forum is a great place to learn this kinda stuff. also, are you going to be able to gte rid of the fry once they are grown, they can have over a hundred so u may want to make sure your not going to get stuck with 100+ betta fish :D good luck, i too am working on my first spawn, theres definately some strategy to it, im going to be makeing my 4th attempt here in the next couple weeks, never seems to go quite right for me -_-
